I need to replace the current arrangement for attaching my forestay to the stem of my dinghy, which is currently held in place by string! I am looking at bottle screws for this but am not sure what size I need or how to measure it.

Could someone offer some guidance or point me in the direction of the appropriate person as to how to make sure I get the right size?

Thanks

You basically have the choice of metric or UNF thread. UNF is a finer thread so is probably (?) better but metric is easier to find and can be much cheaper. For use on a dinghy forestay 1/4" UNF or 6mm would probably be OK. If you are happy with cheap and cheerful just type M6 stainless bottle screw in Ebay. Next size up would be 5/16 UNF or M8.

Why not keep the lashing. Presumably a length of light cord .. 3mm or something like that... which passes through the attachment on the stem and the eyesplice on the forestay several times.

My sailing dinghy has the forestay attached in that way..... no problems... easy to tension ... no bits to lose... no reason to consider changing it to a bottle screw.

Never mind dinghies, our last yacht had a lashing for the forestay :)

(She was gaff-rigged, though, and very much a string, wood, and greased leather kind of boat.)

I suppose that's the thing. It depends on what sort of dinghy te OP has.

Stainless steel rigging screw if its a modern FRP boat that flies like s**t of a chromed shovel.

Lashing if its a traditional clinker built boat

A dinghy will have usually adjstable plates at the shrouds and cord attachment at the forestay. As said it works well no real reason to replace it. However consider a highfield lever in place of the cord. This can allow a large tension to be applied very quickly when rigging up. The bottle screw will have to be wound up a lot each tiome you rig the mast. Unless you are going to leave it up. good luck olewill
