Following a couple of successful trips from Lincoln to Wells next the Sea, we are setting off on a longer trip from Lincoln to Lowestoft with the intention being to then head off for a night or two at Southwold then head back onto the Broads for a week, then head back for home.

We are embarking on this trip with another boat, the crew of whom have been on many much more adventurous trips, plus the Lowestoft area was their cruising ground up until a few years ago.

To put my mind at ease are there any areas we should be keeping a close eye on and any points to watch out for. We set off on Monday so any advice would be greatly appreciated. We dont have a rag and stick either :D

Oh and fingers crossed for decent weather.

We used to take our sailyboats from Newark through Boston, stoping at Lowestoft, to the Deben. We did Boston to Lowestoft in one hop, should be no problem to your guys as you will probably do more than 4/5 knotts (ignoreing tide).

We were shallow draft and used to go out from Boston over the sandbanks and then skirt around the Norfolk coast as close as we could to the beaches because it was shorter and it was also more interesting. We also used to go along the coast at Gt Yarmouth. We only used the marked chanels at night and in bad weather.

Only do this if you are happy skanking about in shallow water and know where you are. I would not want to hit a sandbank at the speed some of these fast motorboats travell.

My guess is if you can handle the Wells area you should be fine dodging sandbanks.
When you get to Lowestoft there is the Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht club just inside the entrance. Inside the harbour is Haven which is very nice but the bridge etc is a pain.
Getting into Southwold can be tight and gets busy at weekends.
When you come back up maybe go into the Haven then go through the Southern Broads to Great Yarmouth (1/2 way home) ;)

other than the sandbanks the only real hazard is the crab pots off cromer especially as the tide turns. They string lines of them, together with a line just below the surface. I got myself stuck fast last July on the way to Ijmuiden. I would keep an absolute minimum of 6 miles off the coast there are hundreds of the buggers. I got tied in a knot with 3 buoys along side that were all along way from the boat when i thought i was passing them at a safe distance.

A good place to stop in offshore winds is Sea Palling
