Does a Borg warner marine gearbox have a mechanism that will lock the propshaft when the engine is nor running

As a hydraulic gearbox without the engine running there is no lubrication oil that could damage the GB if the propshaft were driven without the engine running thus pumping oil

No it doesnt have any lock mech. Clutch plate wear from drag, on the forward pack is also of concern. If I remember correctly the reverse set have spring separators.

Have used for years, a rope tied one end and a moderate nylon tie at the end, dropped on a coupling bolt. for places where the shaft turns because of water flow, ie Rhine, Severn, Appledore .
The nylon tie loop is long enough, to be an easy break safety link, keeping the rope away from a rotating shaft should the engine be needed without the time available to go to the engine room and free the shaft.
