We've been having a fairly run-of-the-mill bora here in Trieste over the past couple of days - nothing extraordinary but enough to knock over mopeds, rubbish bins, old ladies; that sort of thing. Over on the island of Pag, however, they've been enjoying 240 kph (130 knots) gusts! Now that's a breeze and a half!
My question is: why don't they build their houses better in the southern states of the U.S.? Hurricanes are frequent there, yet they build houses with sellotape and balsa wood. Is there a reason?

Rebuilding houses every year or two is good for business and creates al lot of jobs. Not to talk about the insurance companies...and the politicians? And who wants to live in an old house anyway?

Hope the sheep were tied down - cheese of Pag was our favourite comestibile discovery on our first of many trips to Croatia in October. Interesting alternative to Parmesan.

well, in america, anything that last more than 10 years is old, so they probably think they are rather overdoing it by using balsa instead of the usual cardboard. Meanwhile, be honest, Venice is over 500 years old and well past it and should sensibly be ripped down and use the rubble for a nice seawall for a monster marina, imho.

We have on Krk bridge 214 km/h and I still repair my boat after this huge Bora. Our Islanders can not remember such strong Bura, specially as it was not NE then N and enter in Omisalj bay directly.
Your question regarding building standards in US and Carribean I asked myself a lot of times, but Americans thinks that we are in wrong and ask us why we build houses for 3 generation. They cannot understand that most expencive houses ,here on the Adriatic, are old villas.

No, not serious. I loose passarella and fence is smashed on one side. Everything is repaired. Other boats have more serious damaged. 3 masts were cracked...
When this winter will pass !
