Boot top.

Will boot top paint 'take' over antifouling or can it only be used edge to edge ... butting up against it?
I know ordinary paint goes horrible if you get a bit over the antifouling but wondered if boot top was different.

Either Waterline (Blakes) or Trilux (International) are themselves antifouling, and are no problem with the regular stuff.

No, boottop should go over anti-fouling absolutely fine (as long as its a similar formulation - use the same manufacturer to be on the safe side): it's usually a harder, scrubbable version of the antifouling. I usually paint topsides, then antifoul up to meet them, then do the boot top over both(masked off above and below) to make a nice straight line.

Well you can't paint those over, for example, Micron Extra as they are not compatible. Possibly the other way round though.

I've not bothered with separate stuff for many years now, so simply mask up the bootline and use the same Micron Extra as for the hull. Makes scrubbing the W/L easy and avoids any build up.

No, if your antifoul is "soft", don,t put hard/boot top, over it. It will probably flake. Bill.

I don't put anything over antifoul as water creeps up behind the top coat that way. Leads to unsightly blistering. If your topside are painted make sure the antifoul covers that paint and not the other way around.

I used Blakes Yacht Enamel for my boot top. Very scrubbable.

i was recomended to use a hard Mobo A/F by a marine paint sprayer does the same job cheaper

I used Blakes yacht enamel for my boot top last year. Lots of it flaked off or crazed...

I'll be interested to hear how it works out for you.

This year I'm back to Blakes waterline paint - but have cunningly chosen a colour to match my inflatable dinghy. Previously I found that this waterline paint rubbed off on the dinghy.

Mine stayed on perfectly for 2 years (and longer, I sold it after 2 years). Perhaps you didn't prepare properly, or did you put it over antifoul?

Thanks for your replies -- all the paint on this boat is Blakes, both topsides gloss and antifoul ... wooden boat ... I'll use Blake's boot top!

I use B+Q one coat gloss and butt the antifoul up to it. Seems to go okay.

But why bother with a boot top at all. Just antifoul and the jobs done, Why frig about masking it all off again and spend another half day painting on a fancy stripe.

I once had a double boot top, one line matching the topsides and one line above it matching the A/F. Nearly time to haul out before I got it launched!

I will use just gloss for a boot top Vic, I find it does make keeping the waterline clean/tidy, without disturbing the antifoul. Bill.

Im just repainting Vega did the topsides and transom then it rained for 10 minutes,first rain for a week or so down here, /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Think the sides are OK but the transom probably needs redoing.

Im still debating to boot top or not.It does look smart and is more scrubbable (is that a real word?) than the A.F. All down to weather and time before she goes back in.

That was a Valiant 18, not a great sailboat, but very seaworthy and cheap. Actually a very nice cockpit to occupy. The boot top is invaluable on a freshwater lake as the green slime creeps up the topsides and looks awful. The boot top in a dark colour hides the slime and is easy to wipe.

Our club moorings effectively in a freshwater lake since the Cardiff Barrage was built.We have discovered the creeping green slime. It seems to prefer being just above the waterline.
