Hi,

Sunrunner has a double-line boot top and I was thinking of changing the colour. Would nitromors remove the existing boot top OK ? (AFAIK it's just a gloss paint.) If so then would it have an adverse effect on the gel coat or the epoxy layer on top of the gel coat below the waterline ? Is it possible to mask off the antifouling below the boot top so as to avoid stripping that with the nitromors ? If so what would work for that ?

Finally, I have had it suggested that International gloss paind is the right stuff for a boot top, any comments ?

Thanks,

Boo2

I would try scraping it off dry with a Bahco or similar pull scraper, if it is just gloss or Toplac it will come away easily, if it does not then it is fine for overcoating. Abrade, degrease with acetone, undercoat and gloss. If it is hard to shift it is probably two pack and it would be worth using a two pack epoxy for durability, particular if you occasionally scub round your waterline with a brush.
I helped re-do the three broad stripes on an X yacht recently, lightly abraded, rub over with acetone, paint applied with 4" roller and lightly tipped off immediately with a high quality 3" brush ( two man job) Looked as good as the original gelcoat stripes. One coat of two pack worked well because the original dark blue colour was repeated. About 1/2 litre for the whole job, but few yachts have as many stripes as an X.

How do you make the pattern for an adhesive boot top stripe or it it all the same width regardless of hull position?

I used this stuff last year to remove a painted on boat name and it does a great job in removing gloss paint from GRP with no damage.

Paint it on and leave to dry for about four hours and then use a hose with a nozzle or better a jet wash to just hose it all off and job done.

Nitromors will melt your hull. Just mask off, prime the old surface and paint the new colour on top. No need to remove the old boot stripe colour.

I think you will find that Nitromors no longer ( as of 2011) contains dichloromethane .. the substance which was detrimental to GRP.

Just done mine with a Jotun boot top anti fouling as it got weed and slime on it last year. If it is above the waterline, just mask off and paint over. No need to remove existing paint.
