Replacing thin topping lift and thinking about putting on proper second (spare) main halyard instead with “boomstrut” from Barton Marine (http://www.bartonmarine.com/index2.htm)
This seems to be a good concept as does away with moving parts of other boom support devices (and also much cheaper – see this months YM).
Seems like a good set up to me.
I’ve never noticed boomstruts anywhere, but plenty of rodkickers etc.
Anybody got them? Any good?
Thanks

One has just been fitted to a friends Contessa 28 - he thinks its great, but make sure you finally adjust for length after testing - he cut it to length before testing and then had to move the fixing point on the boom as it did not lift the boom under trials! Cheaper than other boom struts and nothing to go wrong.

Good idea to use topping lift as spare main halliard.
I had a boomstrut on my old boat - really good when stowing the sail as you don't have to adjust the topping lift before sorting out the main - I was never convinced about whether it made the boat go any better.
