Books on splicing

Any recommendations on splicing handbooks?

This will be a Christmas present (along with some tools). Looking at Adlard Coles list, I have found a Polman book, Splicing Modern Ropes and the Splicing Handbook by Merry and Darwin but I've seen a few negative comments on the former. I'm mainly interested in dyneema and braided ropes and tapering as well as eye splices, and making soft shackles.

Yes, you have to have Brion Toss's "Riggers Apprentice."

And you really ought to have the Ashley Book of Knots.

After that. well, because I am a friend of Des Pawson I shall put in a plug for his books.

But to be honest I find it easier to learn from a Youtube video

I forget the exact title, but there is an RYA guide to knots, lines and all common splices. I was pleasantly surprised. It's a yellow paperback.

Erm, you will find little if any reference to that in the Rigger s Apprentice, I have the book and it is one I refer to the least.
IMHO, as a gift the Ashley book of knots imho comes number one, as a practical book the Liros, Gleistein, Samson, etc booklets are *a lot* more useful than the RA.
(Without mentioning youtube).

I ordered both from Amazon and they just arrived. The Polman book has colour photographs that are much too small, the Merry books is black and white but a bit clearer - and attempts to cover everything. Will report back later.
