Somehow, I've missed out on reading any Kipling until now, but decided it was an error I should correct, so found my library ticket and paid a visit.

First one I tackled is 'Captains Courageous', which I'd heartily recommend with great descriptions about fishing under sail on the Grand Banks, in the days when there were fish to be had there. The schooner 'We're Here' spends months at sea, catching and salting cod caught by line from dories.

A good seafaring read, and a good book overall, although, obviously dated.

Thats probably why I recomended it on the book forum!

"Kim" is one of my favourite books, with its descriptions of the way of life of so many of the different people of India. It is also why Kipling now probably has a better following in India than in UK.

If you read Kim and like it, then there are some books by John Masters that follow a similar path and are also well worth a read.

If you think the book is good, you should see the film !!
1936 I think - with a youngish Spencer Tracey, and some of the best footage of Grand Banks Schooners (or indeed any boat!)under sail I have ever seen. One of my desert island films.

Just thought of another one!! Kipling's collection of short stories entitled "A days Work" Superb account of blockaded gunboat.
Try also Griff Rhys Jones' "To the Baltic With Bob" - a nice read.

Biography of Kipling

If any of you Kipling enthusiasts wants a tatty paperback copy of Charles Carrington's "Rudyard Kipling: his life and work", please pm me. I don't want anything for it, except the postage. First applicant gets it. [Extra staff have been recruited to cope with the rush]

Kipling

Just been having a clear out and passed a few on to No 2 son - Plain Tales from the Hills was one. I'm keeping Captains Courageous though to reread sometime. I remember fried pies and Counahan the Navigator.

Re: Kipling

For the unitiated Counahan the Navigator set out to fish the Grand Banks, but he and his crew were so mullered on rum that they did't touch a sheet for 15 days, steered a straight course, and ended up Ireland, where they celebrated a record passage, turned around, came home and didn't catch a single fish.

were you not a brussel sprout?
I was very fond of Akela - she kissed me goodnight at the annual cub-camp - I've always thought of it as my first sexual experience
