Hi all, I'm after a pair of bolt croppers for 10mm chain - any pointers on what is suitable? Not wanting to spend the Earth, but want something that works...!

Cheers,
Trev

JTB - have you tried them on Grade 70 chain ? I think that would prove a helluva task.

I've actually used them on both spans of our re-galvanised existing 10mm chain-those 'oh b@@@er' Weigh a fouled anchor' moments:o
The chain is very old, and came with a manual S/L windlass from a friend after we gave up on trying to keep our electric S/L working.

I agree with sarabande, them, plus a Makita cordless angle grinder, ( both kept wrapped up in oily bags) is as good as it gets at reasonable prices. Chinese bolt croppers? best of British luck.

Duh :o why would anyone need to cut 10mm chain in a hurry?

When the diver in Simi winds it round your anchor at night, then watches you struggle in the morning before demanding €150 to dive and free you. The chain round my anchor was not attached to any boat, had been wound completely round the shank of my anchor and was clearly attached to the bottom at both ends. I was lucky. Another yachtsman came over in his dinghy and was able to get the chain off once I had roped it and lowered the anchor just below water level. How do I know its €150? Because I met someone else who had been caught.

Hi all,
Yes I was thinking of a pair to be able to release a fouled anchor, although point taken a hacksaw would get there (although be harder work if the boat was bouncing around). I have an all-chain setup, so dumping it all would work out very expensive. Plus then I would have them for more general use.
Any further thoughts please?!
Cheers,
Trev

Yes, go for the £60 hydraulic cutters on ebay.. They go through chain without any effort. AND you can operate them on a bouncy foredeck with one hand.

OP probably has a hacksaw so just a new blade will help a lot. Another thing that kmight help is one of those vice/clamps used fro holding jobs in a drill press. This would hold the cahin while you cut. Of course on the other hand bolt cutters are considered good safety gear to cut away shrouds of a fallen mast. So op and others can decide what they need good luck olewill

If you just want them to dump a fouled anchor in a hurry, the best way is to deop the lot with a buoy attached so you can come back and retrieve at a convenient time or send a diver down. It's a good idea to carry croppers for cutting away your rigging if dismasted but these are smaller than required for anchor chain.
