This was posted on FakeAche this morning. Someone seemed to think there was a steering failure on the dark coloured boat. I can't recall if there was a link or not.

The dark coloured boat changes course fairly abruptly, so I would think that steering failure was the likely cause, unless it was two drunken Russians having a fight on the bridge.

Steering failure is extremely rare. SOP for confined waters calls for both steering pumps on, and the system will work with either one.

I suspect that the “Florence Spirit” sheered off the starboard (for her) bank. The “Alanis” looks to have been close to the centre of the canal, possibly too much so, and the “Florence Spirit” might have been trying to edge over to give her room.

A long time ago, but when I finished sixth form, a chum of mine went to work on Townsend Thoresen Ferries and as he was VERY bright, he did well there. They rapidly made him an assistant purser. (I guess 'cos he could count.) He told me it was great fun because the whole were always pissed. He's now near retirement as a minister of religion for a non-conformist church.

The Florence point doesn’t look particularly big.
the Welland canal while not wide, is wide enough for two lake sise vessels to pass safely at maneuvering speeds.
the speeds don’t look high, hard to guess, closer to 10 than 15 Knots.
Bank effect maybe, my guess not close enough or fast enough,
steering failure maybe? Or steering error.
My guess power failure, Steering becomes much less effective when screw stops.
Cant say from video which is heading down stream.

Assuming (from a state of pure ignorance about the canal) there's enough water, shouldn't the red boat be further to starboard to pass port to port? If so, the black one might have made a panicked turn to try and pass starboard to starboard.
