Boats papers, Ownership Documents.

Hello Ruffles, I'm a relative newbie and considering my first purchase. I have the same concerns as Shiver Metimbers. I would like to get that RYA booklet you refer to above. The link is now dead. Can you please forward the name of the booklet. Thanks.
There's a lot of info on the RYA website about buying but I think one has to be a member. I seem to recall it covers proof of ownership along with many other aspects.

There's good advice about paper chains in the thread. Very little other than a Part 1 registration proves ownership - but is the seller who he says he is? In practice, a bill of sale from a few years back and SSR registration in the owner's name would do me. Add a few more bits of paper and I'm happy.

There's a theoretical risk of a debt, marine mortgage, or whatever being attached to the boat, but I'd guess such a thing is pretty rare, vanishingly so once a boat's a few years old. It's one of those things that people like to trot out, but has anyone ever experienced it in a normal boat, whatever that is?

The boat I am looking at is a private sale, "too good to be true price" which has got me thinking. Maybe not then, have others through a broker I am still interested in.

Cheers.

All my purchases and my Fathers before me were private non-broker.

A good indicator if the boat is 'stolen' or 'iffy' .... ask about Club / Marina normally kept ... and that will give access to a history if the guy selling is really owner ..

SSR - specifically states it is NOT an Ownership Document ... but like Car Reg document - generally gets accepted as such. Only Part 1 actually lists owners.... under the 64ths rule

A Bill of sale is sufficient when well worded such as the RYA form ... with sellers declaration if necessary to state VAT status.

When did you last read your SSR?
Although there is a note in small print stating that it is not proof of ownership, the front face says - Details of Registered Ownership and it does list registered owners.

As others have said, even Part 1 isn't proof of ownership as any changes may not have been notified to the registry. Anyone having owned a boat for a while should have enough documentary proof - insurance, marina or mooring invoices, radio license etc. in his/her name. If none are available then walk away.

That's always been a bone of contention - the wording of the SSR.

I still have my SSR Blue Book in the draw to the left ... the book they stopped issuing years ago ... with all subsequent SSR's later in it. ... even the SSR of the previous registered 'owner'.
The Latvian Registry actually states without contention or variance real owners - which the boat is with now.

25 Euros for LIFE ... no renewal or re-inspection needed unless I use commercially. None of this 5 years malarky !

Not posted for a long while, so if this comes out wrong it is in reply to tabernacle_man

I'm the guy who bought Barneys Patch from the guy who had it stolen. Boat is now called Macska. He has been up front with me, so I will not disclose his name etc. But I will be visiting friends down his way in January, and I will certainly mention it to him. Name, rank and number for now.
I would love to know if tabernacle_man ever got his 'Reward'
