Hammersmith Bridge taskforce meeting, 15 October 2020
Today's update, note the talk of a footbridge.
Today's update, note the talk of a footbridge.
The problem seems to be that the existing structure is cast iron and minute cracks are appearing. The concern is that the cast iron will shatter.I wonder if they've discussed pile driven Jacks with RSJs at 100 ft intervals to support the existing structure.
Perhaps a good temporary measure and at least should hold good for pedestrians and cyclists. Also for river traffic.
Can't do it.....blown all the money on HS2 and Crossrail ?It's a perfect opportunity to showcase British talent.
Take the bridge apart, haul the parts downriver and reconstruct it in the Gothic section of the upcoming Swanscombe peninsula theme park down near Dartford then get a proper UK engineering company to design and build a new bridge. A quality item to show that this country is a quality country with an eye for quality.
Boats, buses, cars, cyclists and pedestrians NEED to be able to pass under or over the bridge safely. Maybe even the occasional electric paraglider. Proper traffic management and priorities, in line with 21st century (yes!!) ideals and using available technology.
Stop living in the past!
Parts made in China, obviously..
It's too much of a good opportunity to waste.
Yes it's quite nice looking if a little bit scary and also yes it is too low.
Get it gone asap.
Any new news on being able to pass under the bridge. Is there any more escorted passages being planned.
Dave
I've got an idea. Knock the bloody thing down. No-one can pass under it, and no one can cross it. Not being there at all would at least allow river passage, so a better situation than currently exists.
Maybe build a new one, and when they do they could perhaps make it a bit higher.
I don't get this 'historic' business. It's a bridge, it's served us well for over 100 years and is time to go. It's not like we don't have any other historic buildings/landmarks in London to look at.
I was at Molesey lock last Sunday, spoke to the skipper bringing a barge up to to Shepperton from the tideway, too big for the canals. I asked how he got there, he said he came through Hammersmith on a booked passage that weekend and that they were making regular bookings. Unfortunately I did not ask for any details.Nobody heard anything or know anything

Today's update: Hammersmith Bridge Taskforce meeting, 13 November 2020
This bit is of note:
".... the taskforce discussed the potential for further controlled river passages to enable the planned movement of vessels at pre-designated times, based on detailed risk assessments. Planned dates are in discussion for later in November and early December and details on these will be publicised as soon as possible. "
