I've noticed a few forumites mention that, like me, they are bikers too. When i started biking (i.e. motorbiking) about 5 years ago it reminded me of sailing - you check the weather before settiing off, you gear-up in protective clothing, and you expierence the elements much more directly than in a car. Perhaps the natural form of road transport for a sailor is a motorbike?

As an ex-biker and now cyclist I'd say motorbikes and cycles are the equivalent of mobos and raggies respectively. Engines are OK but don't compare to the real thing:nonchalance:

Yes, absolutely, they seem to encompass many similarities.

First mate and I are constantly amazed at the number of sailors we meet who are-or were-motorcyclists.

It is far more than coincidence-it must be the joys of being cold and wet at the same time as having a raging gale around yourself..................................

As an ex biker and current sailor I agree it us uncanny.

I guess the parallel is just like banging your head against a wall......it is heavenly when you stop!

I have checked the forecast this morning, and consider that the conditions look ok to make the passage to work on my motorcycle today ;-)

wimp - 24k mls a year for me commuting!! Avoid only ice and snow.

I would like to think that the one common characteristic is that both are potentially dangerous but we are prepared to learn and be skilful enough to reduce the risk to acceptible and are happy to be self reliant.

I took up cycling to work and the money saved in parking and fuel etc paid for my boat. That was in the recession. I've moved office so don't get to cycle so much and tbh I do miss it. I'm currently working out a hybrid drive and cycle so that I can still get some exercise.

I'm also a biker (motorcyclist) and sailor, and yeah they are two peas in a pod.

Cyclists are more on a par with kayakers, even down to the unfortunate fetish for lycra..

I don't get this - how can you be an ex-biker (without dying)? I didn't have a bike for 7-8years due to circumstance, but was always a biker. Same for sailing, it's just a part of you...

Mmm - not sure. I had a couple of dozen bikes over twenty years, rode all over Europe and worked as a courier but got to say motorbikes do nothing for me now. Those yellow boxes on poles don't help much - speed limits don't apply to push bikes (chance would be a fine thing:rolleyes:).

Dead on. I spent my life from the age of 14 untill I was 60 heavily involved with Motorbikes.

I rode them in competitions, to work, touring, repaired and serviced them and taught others to do the same.

I last rode in May last year-in Washington State, USA.

I find I am not bothered if I ever ride one again, although I suspect the 1913 AJS Model B currently on the workbench will need a test ride or two when its restoration is finished.

I must confess, I am very surprised at this situation, as are my friends from Motorcycling.

Now you are scaring me. Ridden bikes for thirty five years, also courier, also toured Europe - is there any warning of this sudden onset of disinterest? I have to take my girlfriend on a track day next month and I want to be sure to get there...

edit: No yellow boxes on track days!

How on earth do you fit the bike into the car and still be able to pedal and drive?
