My little bro is newly smitten with boating and wants to get a small cruising sail boat - under 25ft, suitable for drying mooring, loo and galley, tolerable headroom, cheap - £2-4K. Happy to do work but I have advised him to look for something that has been loved rather than fixating on a particular model. He has looked at Macwester, Westerly Pageant and a couple of others but they have failed the love test. He has secured a drying mooring on the Dart and is looking for something down that way. He has no ambitions to make challenging passages (yet) and more interested in something he can drop anchor, drink beer and fish from the back. Does anyone know of anything on the market that is worth a look?

Best place to look for something like that is boatsandoutboards or apolloduck or ebay

Yes, thanks - he's doing that - hoping on an off chance to find something with 'provenance' that someone might know. There are plenty of unknown quantities out there.

Could well be worth trolling round the local sailing clubs and asking to see their notice boards. Boats of that type regularly appear on our club board and may well not be advertised elsewhere.

Morning has he looked at a trident 24 I bought one myself last year, yes of course I'm biased but seems to fit your brothers criteria, took a friend who is a very experienced sailor and he was quite impressed with the performance, not going to win races with a tripple keel but didn't spend too much time going sideways, has a very good owners association, gave my brother a few trips and same thing he is looking for something but a bit bigger for his family, good luck to your brother and hope he finds something to suit

Yacht club member friend of mine has a Snapdragon (24 feet I think) for sale for around £2.5K. Fairly new engine with low hours, bilge keel, etc, and currently ashore at our YC on the Tamar in Cornwall. PM me if you might be interested and I'll let him know.

Geoff

Thanks chaps, I have passed on your suggestions and will come back if he is interested in following up on the Snapdragon for sale on the Tamar. I think that's about the geographic limit of where he would be happy sailing back from at this stage in his sailing career. Although, he's a truck driver so maybe he or a mate could stick such a relatively small bilge keeler on a flat bed without any special skills?

The boats are out until ?? end of March, when a crane comes to lift them in. That would be the opportunity to load it onto a trailer/flatbed or whatever. Just to let you know.

Thanks Geoff - could be perfect - he could then get it craned in at Galmpton. He is very interested in the Snapdragon - though he did say he had seen one on Apolloduck - on the Tamar, reengined in ?2007, but showing as no longer for sale - maybe the same one? If it is still for sale, he'd like to take a look. I've also encouraged him to sign up here, so hopefully he might be making a personal appearance later!

Yes, same one. I have emailed my mate to get him to check this page out. I'll give him a ring later as he might not read his mails for a few days!!

Well it looks like little bro is about to join the bigger brotherhood of boat owners, subject to dotting of 'i's, crossing of 't's and handing over of a wad of notes at the weekend. So on his behalf, a big thank you to all for the advice, suggestions and indeed direct leads. I have been roped in to help him sail her round from the Tamar to her new mooring on the Dart late March/early April - can't decide whether to go with him aboard his new boat or shadow him on mine, perhaps with the aid of a megaphone. Either way, should be a good shakedown and doubtless will throw up lots of lovely questions for the forum experts to chew on! Thanks again.

Hi Mark,

Glad that your brother has viewed and agreed to purchase the Snapdragon. I'm sure the owner will have told you about the lift-in, probably end of March, and that he will be away. However others will be around, including myself, so your brother shoudld have no problems getting out onto the mooring. No doubt I will see him down there between now and then.

That's good news, thar snapdragon did sound. A nice boat just had my first season sailing, did 36 trips and had a brilliant time, I hope he has a good time.

I hope so too - he is a bit nervous I think, as he has no boaty experience whatsoever. Baulking too at the price of courses, so he'll get a crash (not literally I hope) course from me on the delivery trip to the Dart then he can play about to his heart's content in the river - the Snappie sounds like a good boat that'll look after him. What did you get?

Surrey once you do a few trips here will pick up the basics and can do courses as and when funds allow and sail accordingly, looking forward to doing more trips with my brother this season, he wants a centaur but not just yet, the snappie sounds a nice boat good engine and suit of sails, put up pics of her we enjoy pics on here... even if I cant do it myself... Do huh, have a great time sailing with a this season.
