We are bringing our 10m boat back from Greece next year and looking at overland or shipping transport options. Anyone got any recommendations or experience please?
There are a number of options depending on the type of boat you have, the time you have available and to a certain extent your budget. The quickest way is Piraeus/Southampton. Runs every week and takes about a week. Approx cost £13k including cradle. PSP will quote for you.
Next simplest is sail up to Slovenia and then road to Channel port, usually Rotterdam, then unload and sail across the Channel. Professional skippered delivery by sea will take 4-5 weeks and cost around £5k, but takes a lot out of the boat as it 2000 miles and best done in the spring as going north up the Portuguese coast is hard work.
Probably best alternatives are sailing to SofF or southern Spain, then road. You can get good return rates from say Marseilles to the Atlantic coast. La Rochelle is popular because many of the French boat factories are in that area and deliver regularly to the Med coast. For direct road transport to UK Sant Carles in Spain is good as there is regular traffic to UK. This is the route I took. Budget around £5k for road transport, but can be less if you get a return load. Simon Butler www.boat-shift.com did my boat.
