Boat Swap Service

Like SwapShop?

I have a Westerly Centaur, looking to swap for a 50' Oyster? Oh and I will throw in my copy of the Shell Channel Guide..

Aah.... what I mean is "can I have your boat for 2 weeks in the Carrib and you can have mine for 2 weeks in the Med" Not a permanent swap.

There is a little bit of inland boat / holiday home swapping. Floridans who want to experience the beauty of Banbury and such. Given the ability of people (including myself) to screw up pretty simple things there's no way I would want to risk the insurance.

Also a problem in swapping the other way: It's my understanding that only a US Resident can skipper a US flagged vessel in the USA.
Perhaps manageable in European waters (well, for the next couple of days at least) but once you get out to the Caribbean and beyond, lots of places get picky about non-owners being skipper, other than on formal charter yachts.

As long as no money changes hands as far as I can see it would be down to trust & any requirements of either the owner's insurance policy about who may skipper his/her boat or the borrower's insurance policy about what boats he/she can skipper (not sure if it's even possible to have a boat insurance policy that works in a similar way to car or motorbike policies that permit you to drive other vehicles)...

There was a swap shop on here, but its a few years ago, the ad went something like..

Hello all, have you ever felt the need to have a quick sail, but without the problems of preparing everything? i have the answer, I have a 20ft sailing boat, it needs a paint, the sails are past their best, it leaks a little, but it is great for having a quick hours sail. what i want to borrow in return, is an immaculate motor boat over 50ft, with a large island bed and a well stocked bar, please understand, i do not want to take your boat out to sea, i will simply take some photos, pretend the boat is mine, then attempt to pull some posh totty, take them back to your boat and shag them, please reply as soon as possible.

who posted that ?... I know of one possible candidate but he would never have admitted his 20 foot yacht was only 20 feet...

People swap campers and houses and even wives ... but swapping boats that would be a whole different sort of thing.....

The people who sponsored this years SBS run such a system. I can't see anyone who is a real enthusiast letting anyone else get their grubby hands on their boat. I certainly wouldn't. House swaps work well but it's unlikely that you'll damage someone's house. If you're someone who sees their boat the same as their car and just drives it about without any of the pleasure of maintenance then it may be of interest. For the vast majority I would think not.

I expect this would be viewed with deep suspicion in places where boat charters are common, like Greece.
Trying to convince them that it is not a charter and being paid for might be difficult.Bit of a bummer if they impounded the boat on day one of the 'swop' cruise. Also, it IS a type of charter, as 'goods' are being traded, so would need to conform to commercial rules.
