Boat sunk - Thames Estuary

Hi there, Pye End et al. I don't even know what Diver Shoal is - sorry! Did a search on Google and came up with two links

http://www.hrwallingford.co.uk/projects/DAM3378%20PDS059%20JVS%200504.pdf

The link below shows photos of the six groynes with the green lights mounted aloft - scroll about half way down the page

They look fairly conspicuous to me but maybe, as someone else has suggested, they were distracted by a big ship moving in/out of Tilbury or something else. Thank goodness that they all got out ok though. No doubt, the official report will shed more light on what happened on Tuesday.

Blimey, they arn't planning round three, with all these port facility photographs are they? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's not really what you'd call a shoal unless you need about 8m to float your boat in.
It's towards the S side of the deep water channel, opposite said groynes.

Navigating up the Thames is just basic navigation. Anyone with any sense who has read the pilot and looked at the chart would make damm sure they missed underwater obsticals.

Years ago I did not really understand what a "training wall" was. I then saw the one at Rye at low water!! Will stick in my memory for ever!

The river is plenty wide enough by the groynes and if there was one ship coming downriver and one going up you would make sure that you let them go by when transiting that area. The river is straight at that point, so not as if you were going round a right angle bend.

Everybody makes a cockup at some time. I will be interested to learn the make and construction of the casualty.

Will be interesting to hear what lead to such a fatal decision.
Thank goodness they all survived!
