Boat sinks at Cala Viñas, Mallorca

Hmm,interesting ,our apartment is in cala vinas. It's quite a small bay,can only fit one boat of that size in really, but theres no hidden rocks or anything to catch you out. If your anchor slips though you probably only have a few minutes to spot it before you'll be on the rocks. That video looks like the boat is outside the bay though, out in the open sea

Will try and find out what happened.

Blimey that looks like a Ferretti. There are some markings on the side of the hull. Charter boat?

Have driven past that bay numerous times. Water is at least 12m+ (probably more) so they haven't grounded as it is outside the bay. Something must have gone wrong with the boat itself??

Now if it were me on the big red boat I would have got a line on her and pulled her to some shallow water if there is any nearby.

A small beach at the bottom of the bay would have been a place to park her.

It wont fit, that beach is roped off for swimmers (like all beaches in mallorca from april to october) with only a small passage down the side by the rocks for pedalos.

If it had Deep Sea Seals like my previous Ferretti, then that wouldn't surprise me

not familiar with anything other than old fashion stuffing boxes you regularly fill with this waxed square sectioned rope thing, but wondering would a failure of a seal system like that not be covered by the e/r bilge pump factory fitted system ?
OK, this assumes the system is ok and running and that the batteries are going strong, but I'd expect they should cope and a human would be able to stuff something around there to reduce the leak and slowly move with the other engine only to safety, no?

cheers

V.

Agree -could be shaft seal -but where are the bilge pumps ? How many in E room -where they serviceable ?
I was thinking looking @ the vid ,most likely a leak from the E room ,perhaps a pipe loose ,from strainer or main seacock .
Pic 30 on this link ( assuming PYB is correct - no reason to dought ) shows a tight E room with V8's poor access above the engines and more importantly the floor pannal between ,where I suspect hiding under out of sight /out of mine the seacocks and strainers .The tanks are transverse behind the photo .
So how does one access /view the seals if it's on V drives and the engine Obviousley sits on bearers aside that grey floor pannal .

2 things to say in response to that. AFAIK the Ferretti 550 was an update of the Ferretti 53/530. The F53/530 had straight shafts, not V drives and I suspect the F550 was the same. Actually the engine access on my F53 was not bad although the top of the engines were close to the deckhead. Second, all Ferrettis I've ever seen have a changeover valve fitted to the main seacocks which allow the engines to suck water from the bilges rather through the seacock. Those valves were quite accessible on my 53 although quite stiff to operate.

So in the case of this Ferretti, either the skipper didn't know about this facility or the flooding had been so severe it had cut the engines before anybody had the chance to change the valves over
