As I'm visiting the Southampton Boat Show for the first time in many years I have spent some time this morning planning the locations of the stands I wish to visit. It took a long time to find a downloadable map and I was well into this activity when I realised my difficulty in locating some companies was due to using a 2007 PBO map.

Can anyone direct me to a 2012 map, on line or in a magazine that shows the stand numbers. I am reluctant to spend £6 on an official guide just to locate half a dozen stands

Peter.

I've been trying to do the same thing.

On at least one occasion in the recent past, Snooks (or his colleagues at IPC Towers - was it PBO?) have been kind enough to put a version on the YBW website. But, I can't see one this time. Also, there isn't one in the September issue of YM.

I guess the SIBS organisers realise that the only reason some people buy the guide is to get hold of the map - hence they are keen to avoid it becoming free issue.

There are a couple of changes to the layout since 2007 - e.g. the westerly extension to the part closest to the water (is that called Solent Park?) but your 2007 map is still likely to be of some use.

I recall the lack of an online SIBS map as being a bugbear every year. Maybe they don't want punters pre-planning a route to just one or two stalls/stands, who knows? Does seem a bit much though to have to pay to get in, then pay for a map, so that you can go and find something that you might buy:rolleyes:

I think it's more the fact that they want to charge you a few quid for a map on arrival.

In previous years PBO has printed one; must check some recent issues as, if they have done, I'll make a couple of copies for our group.

Thanks for your replies. It seems my ticket cost to visit a set of trade stands doesn't cover the geographic location of those stands. Seems crazy to me but what do I know.

Peter.

Keep the £6 in your pocket and just keep asking those helpful people on roller skates the direction to the next stand you want to see!

The stand letter identifies in which part of the show a stand is located. From there, you can just ask someone for directions.

Its got to be a failure of the Boat Show organisers not to have a website to view before attending

That's only if you think it's missing because they're numpties.

I think it's missing because they're grasping gets who want to force you to buy a programme.

On that basis I'll find my way by trial and error before I give them any cash (hopefully I'll do neither by photocopying a magazine).

agreed and their policy is failing as evidenced with the rapid decline of the LIBS. I will not attend LIBS in 2013 for the first time after some 15yrs & I get free tickets!

I think the lack of a published map and list of exhibitors is really irritating and surely does nothing to encourage folk to go to the Show, if you don't know who's there and you can't do some advance planning.
While there wasn't a map in YM, dunno about PBO, I saw someone squinting at one over lunch in the RYA Lounge and it looked like it came out of ST.
The organisers really should be putting this stuff on their website.

They do list the exhibitors on the site (at least, they did last year) and I think they give stand numbers. They just won't give you a map unless you hand over some cash at the door.

There was one in PBO, the August edition. I scanned it in and emailed it to my phone. And then in practice didn't need to look at it anyway, as I wasn't there to see any specific exhibitors and I know what the layout's like.

Agree.

They are giving away free magazines in the main bar/restaturant area that have maps in the middle pages which are better than nothing!"

It's hard to understand why we have this mentaility in this country of "short termism", where it is necessary to grab whatever funds possible. It clearly alienates people and probably a lot more that can be seen here!
Some shows, in Frankfurt for example, offer applications for your smartphone whereby you can search by name and then see the stand location and other info. Even a "buddy finding" app that gives you the last known position of friends at the show.
