I am interested to find out if people have security systems on their boats and do they feel that the systems available are good or bad. Also it would be good to know what would be the ideal system and how much would they pay for it.

I used to have an alarm system on my previous boat, but the marina didn't want it left on given the amount of false alarms the boats in their marina suffered.

On the new boat, I will be installing a simple device that will notify me (SMS/email/cellphone/etc) when shore power is disconnected.

This will tell me two things. Either shore power had failed, or that the boat is being driven away.

In either case, I can call the marina and alert them.

Marina happy, me happy, solution.

My boat was broken into a couple of weeks ago. Some guy forced the doors from the cockpit into the saloon. They were secured by a Yale lock. This person also broke into the Birchwood next to me and had the cheek to spend the night on it!

The police gave the boat the once-over & I took their advice. Intruder alarm on anything that opens - NOT any kind of PIR. reinforced hinges & bolts from door frames into the doors when they're closed. New nightlatch on the doors AND one of those new padlocks where you can't access the bolt part to cut it. The interesting thing is, most of these security things came from B&Q & were relatively cheap.

My advice is - don't leave it like I did until someone's broken in & proved to you that your security isn't good enough. Also remember that a break in is more likely than theft of the whole boat.

Although I am now in Engineering, I previously owned a CCTV Surveillance company and have recently become aware of new technologies that could possibly be adapted for boat security.

I am seriously looking at this as a business opportunity so sorry I can't be more specific. If I do decide there is something in it I will be coming back to the forum for your views (and a few advanced orders!!)

We have a Sealarm Harbour guard fitted. It monitors gas, flood and breakins at 4 points. The system is VHF linked to our local boat yard who are on 24 hr call out. False alarms are charged £25.

At night, if the alarm is triggered, the boat yard alarm goes off and this alarm is linked to the police. It cost about £500 but you need to be in range of a base station which receives the vhf signal.

Don't have anything fitted, but this caught my eye the other day.

Looks quite adaptable.

I guess it could also be 'found' using a phone locator web system thingy....
