Boat restoration

As an accomplished old boat restorerwhet is your opinion about buying a old saywesterly centaur and doing it up.Opinion seems to be it’s not worth it meaning it’s a waste of time as there is no profit in it ?

Depends on how bad it is and how low the price is. A friend has recently bought a Centaur in very good condition for £6000. Very little to do and already sailing her. As I have renovated my own boat, I can honestly say I will never get back what it has cost me without paying for any labour. I did it for my benefit as I planned to keep Concerto for a minimum of 10 years (already got there) to 15 years. But it has meant very little in maintenance costs for the past few years and by the time I sell a lot of bits will probably need replacing again. I will get value for the money I have spent, plus I have enjoyed doing the work.

It is more than worth it in a way that many seem to miss.
An article in a yachting magazine asked top sailers with 500,000 miles plus experience about what they considered the most important thing when sailing off shore.
They all said knowledge of every square inch of the boat and how it all works and being a carpenter, plumber, electrician, sailmaker, mechanic etc. If you dont have the skills then you need to learn them or take someone who does have them.
Restoring a boat ticks all the boxes. A lot of googling on how to and then learning by doing can be very rewarding and saving a fortune on the hope that the guy your paying is actually doing a good job, and lets not forget some of us really enjoy boat restoration.

In my opinion the value isn’t in the resale value, it’s in the experience of doing it up . U will spend about what it cost for a well maintained one to get everything right with it so as long as your prepared for that cost then it’s ok .

100 percent agree with this ,this is the exact reason I prefer to restore than buy one witch is supposed to be ok , because you don’t know how high of a standard everything has been maintained too , where as if you do it yourself when you go to sea u can have peace of mind that everything is the way it’s supposed to be .
