The RYA has a handy procedure list and documents to use if you wish.
The link to the relevant area should be here
RYA Knowledge base
I am using it at the moment and based on conversations with those who are more experienced in these matters than I, it seems to be pretty comprehensive.

If you are an RYA member then get their members pack for “Buying a Secondhand Yacht” at

I've sold 2 boat in the last 2 years and the proceedure I followed was,

1. Agree price for vessel and written inventory subject to survey if they want one. Agree on required documentation should sale complete.
2. Accept deposit upto 10% on agreement.
3. Release vessel for survey at buyers expense and responsibility.
4. Discuss survey and renegotiate if defects are found and you both want to proceed.
5. Arrange sea trial should buyer what one.
6. If all has gone well arrange, transfer of balance of purchase price. Once the funds have cleared the vessel is then sold.
7. Hand over all documents and keys etc.
8. Buy another boat.
I used a contract downloaded from the RYA site and it gives protection to both parties involved. It lays down time limits for proceedures to be completed, has get out clauses should either of you wish to back out. Good luck! PS. Both my deals took a month to nurse through the sale.

Are you purchasing privately or thru a broker?

If thru a broker you have some safeguards including a client account with the bigger companies.
Absolute must is a survey, they almost always find some faults that you can use as a bargaining tool. The RYA pack is good but not comprehensive, as twister ken says try & get a sea trial, it may be difficult to arrange this time of year but imho is an essential. I did on my last purchasing foray & nearly ended up with a Dog as I was very impressed with price but took her out & wow things started to go wrong.

So take your time & put the intended purchase on here as well, I did with my Dufour & got all sorts of reply's mostly good.
Good luck & let us know how you get on.
