Whem buying a boat, what reduction (if any) would you expect to get off the face price at the current time.
Specifically intrested in the sub £10,000 region.

Question for both pre and post survey.

20-25%...

Most boats in that price bracket seem to be very optimistically priced. The cost of a survey is significant - if the boat looks sound, it might be a fair bet to proceed without a survey.

Prices I paid against asking prices ....

Alacrity ..... asked 1500, I paid 1150
Snapdragon 23 ..... asked 3500, I paid 1100
Sunrider 25 ...... asked 8500, I paid 7990

In fact these are not untypical even the Snapdragon !!!! So really you can see that it really depends on how hard you press. The Snap - the seller was quite rude and slammed phone down ..... 3 days later he called me and accepted offer, 3 hrs later it was on the truck.

I have bid on other boats ..... Pageant, asked 7500, I bid 6500, sold at 6900 ..... Centaur, asked 14000, I bid 9500, sold at 10500 ......

What I am trying to illustrate is - it is a Buyers market, especially in the sub 10,000 category. Many people now are taking enormous marine mortgages and buying newer larger jobs .. where negotiable margins are tighter.

Often you will also find boats for sale in this category where the seller is upgrading and has to sell fast ...... your advantage.

Sorry but cash is cash and I don't give it away easily ..... of course when I'm selling its a different matter !!

Depened show much you want the boat! I have paid less than a third of the asking price and other times I have actually paid more than the asking price. If you want the boat and it's what you want then pay a fair price. Put the boot on the other foot and imagine you were selling.......

Thanks for all the info.
Very interesting to hear what other people have been paying. Thus helping to make certain that the boats I look at are in theory in my price bracket. Did seem from the feedback received that Motor Boats can be bargained down more than Yachts. Could be down to the bargainer.

Is there a good time of year to buy? Presumably going into the winter and not into the summer.

And yes I agree better reading for a buyer than a seller. But if they are upgrading the next boat should be cheaper, well at least in theory.
