Boat owner again

Last time I was in Ste Maxime (three or four years ago), the caraffe's of white wine had live slugs in the bottom. Unfortunately we didn't notice until we'd drunk half of the bottles (we'd ordered two). The waiter wasn't at all apologetic and claimed they'd fallen off the ceiling!

You really found a fantastic boat, and I am very much looking forward admiring her via your own pics! You decided to keep her in Spain, but Needless to say, that the tiny Ionian/Adriatic community of this parish would most welcome you, also if only for a visit!

I understand that you didn't made the best experiences with the "med" style buying process. Be assured, that you are not the only one. Don't ask why ;-)

BTW - I also did look at Ferretti's 3 years ago but I didn't find one for my budget which didn't had GM engines...

If you end up doing it on the plane, then I'd recommend you to;

1) Run engines up to 1100 RPM to get the temperature up...
2) Get her up on the plane at around 1800 + RPM and observe gauges settling down
3) Run her up to WOT and keep for a short while ... then drop back to max WOT minus 200 RPM

the engines love to run continuously at 18 - 1900 RPM for long as you can feed them ... and if WOT is 2300 (pretty sure that is factory setting), then I would not hesitate to run them at 2100 if temperature is stable ... but they will be less stressed and happier at 1900 if you are having longer ( >5 hour) runs...

Do remember to do the WOT test and throttle back !!! ... I remember SD in here ran the Hatt at WOT for the delivery without knowing (engines will not sound stressed) .... and like him, you won't like the fuel bill for taking out the last 20% power .. :)

There is a window over the weekend. Its the sea state rather than the wind that bothers me. I think it will be a late friday PM departure, though whenever I think the window will be small enough that we are going to have to do it on the plane.

Tricky Jez. Weekend has questionable sea state, and obviously Monday+Tuesday =best for weather but of course doesn't fit well with work etc etc I guess. What to do? If you start the trip and need to bail out before crossing GdL proper, you could duck into Port Napolean, just past Marseille. Interesting entrance - do your homework on it. The place is awful but has very sheltered boat storage so you could even leave the boat the a few weeks if needed. It would get a mere 40 miles under your belt, out of the 320 or so you gotta do to get to SCM, so not brilliant. And MRS for flights not NCE

Another option perhaps is pootle right around the north coast of GdL so there is no fetch. I've never heard of anyone doing that but it's a possibility I suppose . Other than that I dunno what you can do other than try it and hope for best, or return to SanMax

Not sure on my own plans yet. If I come down it'll prob be early Friday, away again Sat pm. I'll give you a shout if I'm local.

One thing to mention is that after the massive storms a few days ago, keep your eyes peeled for debris washed out to sea, like trees and planks etc. You do notice this sort of thing in the immediate aftermath of big rainfall down there.
 
Yep, though to keep it balanced remember the biiig rainfall was east of SanMax. The debris could of course blow slowly westwards, but the mistral is producing westerlies so it should be blowing eastwards. I hope! But I agree - take much care down there generally in aftermath of big rain

Jez, if you would like to start the trip, instead of stopping / bail out in Port Napoleon, I would stop in Corbieres or Estaque, (both west of Marseille)
its closer to MRS airport, and its probably not much more expensive than PN.
also both Marina's are save! (not like Marseille old port)
keep in mind that in PN there is absolutely nothing, there are even no marinero's to help you unless you pay someone !
taxi's have to come from a distance, and the taxi drive to the airport takes a while,
is again another 15nm after Marseille, without any progress towards SCM,
the place is very depressing and unfriendly
(that was all 4 year ago)

re the distance,
I didn't check accurately! from St Maxime to Marseille is at least 80nm !,
but you have than done maybe only 40nm from the 320 stretch to SCM

Port Napoleon is really not a nice place to be stuck although there are plenty of maintenance companies on site to do repairs. The mosquitos are also the size of small birds so get some industrial strength repellent. The nearby town of Port St Louis has got to be the shittiest town in France. Much better to be kicking your heels in St Maxime than Port Napoleon

If the weather isn't near perfect for this trip, IMHO best advice is to abort for another date. You don't know the boat yet and you really don't want to be stuck in the middle of GdL in marginal conditions trying to fix stuff
 
Port Napoleon is also expensive for a short stay and although close to Marseille airport is actually an hour's drive around the water. Cheapish for a lift out if you need one though.
They damaged my boat when I was there.
Saturday looks doable but not flat by any means. You can always go slightly North, nearer the coast if it's a bit rough.
If it helps, I'm sat in a beach bar in Salou and it looks flat as a pancake out there. :)

Probably added to the taste. I recall once in SoF, over the course of a few days of eating in the gathering dark, a camembert which started ripe and just got better and better. Eventually I noticed the maggots and that did put me off a bit. But the flavour...:D
 
It looks quite do-able to me on Fri/Sat. Any stronger winds are from the east, and planing boats are fine in even moderate following seas. The wind will also be dropping as time goes on, so you may as well make a start and see how the first 20-30 miles down the coast feel. If you're happy enough on that stretch, then it's then only 140 miles across GdL to pick up the Spannish coast just south of Roses.

Looks good for an early start Sat, top up the tanks in Porquerolles/Toulon when they open if necessary (8am I think in Porq), then should be a settled crossing of GdL. Wind may turn a bit more on the nose for the run up the Spannish coast, but should be fine close to the coast, and you can always port hop that bit, and just stop somewhere if it gets too uncomfortable. Good luck.
