My earlier post discussions about inboard or outboard has me now thinking diesel has advantages over petrol. The Merry Fisher 790 is pretty much right for us first timers. Any advice on similar diesel makes/models to research?

I’ve not heard of a 790. I have the 805 with I/B diesel - I don’t think there are many for sale at the moment though.

Beneteau do some diesel inboard models of similar style to the Jeanneau, also Ocqueteau (spelling?) and Parker. The 795 is a nice boat, so don't rule it out. If everything else about it is right for you, and we have already worked out that Petrol will work for your area, it is still a good option.

Are you looking new or used?

Can someone give me idea on cost litre for red, white and petrol at marina's. What is this 60/40 mix I read about. Do you mix red and white or are two tanks required.

You declare at the pump what your “mix” of use is - so propulsion or heating.

60/40 is the accepted standard for 60% propulsion / 40% genie and heating - and that is what they tax you - I believe you can make up your own split but it’s just easier to go with the 60/40 as you don’t have to prove anything.

However, if you don’t have a generator, or diesel heating, I don’t know if they check or not.?

Other advantage, if like me you have rural areas near, you can buy cans of red, all at the lower rate of duty, which of course you would only use for your gennie.......

Lots of 805’s about, so more choice and probably easier to find a diesel. Not sure if an 805 can be legally towed?
When I looked last week there was only one in the Uk for sale. The same one that’s been for sale for over a year...whatever the reason.

Yes I see only 1 - however worth keeping an eye out.

Some foreign boats seem well priced though, I know you have the 20% VAT to add, but still may be good value even then.

Not so sure about well priced so much as older and therefore cheaper. Not just the 20% VAT on top of the price, the cost of looking, surveying, getting it home will be more and add to the overall cost to have it sitting on your mooring.
