Boat names

When we bought the boat (at a budget busting cost!), it was called "Why Worry". Didn't like it at first, but after a while it actually seemed very apt, so we've kept it

The worst one I've ever seen? A boat called "That's a good idea Grandad" (Sorry if it belongs to a forumite) You can imagine........"Solent Coastguard, this is That's a good idea grandad""

"Station calling Solent Coastguard, you were overspoken, please say again"!!!!

When I first had my boat, it was kept on Thames. It had to be registered with a unique name (not like Part 1 registry, it has to be unique to Thames) and over the years, most of them have been taken.

Raking brain, I came up with Iditarod. Iditarod is the annual Husky sled race in Alaska (an endurance race over hundreds of miles), and I'd stayed in the hotel which is the command centre for the race. It seemed to fit, and not suprisingly, was unique and accepted!

It's been a joy ever since, as no end of people wander up and ask what it means, and a very very few wander up, know what it means, and as why! <G>

We spent hours over this one, and didn't want anything in the 'Thanks Mum' or 'I spent it' vein. My surname is Millsted and at school my nickname (and my brothers, and now my daughters) was Millie. Our boat is French (Benteau), and we both loved the film Amelie, so we sort of combined them and got 'Amillie', which had a nice personalised ring to it and also it's not too long to spell on the VHF. Did toy for a brief moment however with 'Benny Two' (Beneteau) and 'Auntie Rez' (Antares). Then I sobered up and did what SWMBO wanted. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well Done

Congrats on a excellent thread in a poor interest week!

Best i remember was "white powder" on a cigarette boat - pushing (no pun intended) his luck I thought!

As said earlier I have to say that Kates recent "Slipper 1" was knob out as thay say - made me want to buy a Thames classic launch right away........

There was a BP Tanker called British Flag which caused all sorts of issues around the world you know " what ship?" oh British flag etc etc Look Buddy we know its British whats the name?

The other classic is "The Wife" with QHM Portsmouth famously repling to a call up with " I hope not!" think about it......bloody funnny at the time

One more Toy III, Don't Touch, Shiver, Wild Card, Disco Volante, motivator and Tsunami are some of the best i've seen. Try looking at the names of race horses in the papers might spark an idea.

"Abandon Office!!!" nuff said! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seen a Sealine C39 in Alcudia with "Irene Forever".

Thought it would be amusing to berth next door with "Irene For A Weekend" /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I had a very fast 18ft. Phantom with a 200hp Black Max on the back. It was called Exlax cuz it had the same effect especially if the front bow tank was'nt trimmed. Dave.

Once saw a Phamtom 21 with twin Black Max outboards called "Kin-Ell", which I also thought was pretty apt! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Formed a rally team with some mates back in the late '60s which we called "Team Excalibur". Something to do with carving through the opposition, cutting them down to size, etc, etc. Then I got my first speedboat and called it "Excalibur Too" with same style lettering as the graphics on the cars (pinched the idea from "Avenger Too"). Seemed quite apt for a boat that rose up out of the water, somehow. By the time the next boat came along, the rally team had disbanded so we reverted to plain Excalibur and now we're on Excalibur II. Funny how you can get attached to a name isn't it?

I thought most Sealine's were called Eileen...
or is that becuase the way they run at speed?....

Only joking all Sealine owners

My first ever boat was a titchy little 15 foot thing that was so old the osmosis had osmosis.

She was called Freddie Flintstone which was always a bit awkward when speaking on the VHF...

My Cap Camarat is called Nautibusiness, becasue that is what I do ;-) and my old Newhaven Sea Warrior was called Quest.
I am not sure what the Quest was about as she had been given the name by her previous owner, but my little Merry Fisher 695 is called Quest II. I think it should really be "Quest to?" as I never know where I am going, how I am ging to get there, and why I am going in the first place....

My boat was named ZOIE by it's first owner,I thought about changing it until a greek friend told me it meant LIFE. Apt i thought.

Best one we've seen was "PISTON BROKE". /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We named ours "PATRONUS" - a spell Harry Potter uses to keep the madness away!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
