Boat Names

"Miracle" was so named when I bought her.
As I am often asked about the name I have concocted a number
of explanations, none true, but I do like a story!

Two of my sailing friends have yachts called Angel and Spirit
Together we would seem to make an eclesiastic group, apart from the swearing!

We used to have a boat we called "Latest Flame", 'cos the wife's called Marie - and as Elvis would sing, "...and Marie's the name, of his latest flame...." Our current boat's called "Prophecy", no particular reason other that we once bought a boat called "Prophecy" and we liked the name...

I nearly renamed Molly to Dev Ocean but as stated earlier kept it to Molly. My mate has had DownTime a 35 foot Endurance which he swapped for a 47 foot steel boat called Sea Fever

Years ago our SCOD came into our family with the name 'Lusula' which we didn't like - the orginal name was 'Norama' as she had been ordered and built for the John Lewis Partnership and all their boats have this name (still do - I think I've seen Norama IV about somewhere) and we didn't care for that name either.

The children called their Oppie 'Jemima' - after the Beatrix Potter etc and so they wanted to call the 'big boat' 'Mrs Tiggywinkle'.

On the grounds that there was no way I was ever going to get on the VHF saying "Brixham Coastguard, this is 'Mrs Tiggywinkle'", we settled for 'Tiggy', and have nothing but fond memories (except for the accomodation, uncomfortable cockpit...)

Latest boat name was by nomination and some 'democratic manoevring' in the family.

Ours is "Evadne", I didn't change it when I bought her because I didn't think to, and then I found out it cost £35 for the priviledge (registered) and then I grew to like it, and after all it is the name she was first launched with. It is fun when visiting France, too, watching the locals trying to pronounce it (or spell it).
I prefer to think of her a a water sprite from the Greek pantheon rather than an ageing transvestite pianist.

We have a green Mirror dinghy called 'The Magnificent 7' after a formerly dreadlocked demi-god who once earned his living North of the Border. Mrs Dougie has a navy blue and white Wayfarer called 'Braveheart' and the Westerley Centaur is 'Calandra' which apparently means sky lark - so all aboard .....

Well - migrating to the Dinghy names ....
How about a Wayfarer called ...

Walloping Window Blinds

Not mine - another boat in the Dinghy park ...

my boat names have included:

a fireball - "tacks evader" (never did get a puncture in those trolley wheels!)
an iso - "stern words" - the quietest boat we've ever sailed

not named the last two

A couple of boats ago we decided to change the name of our new purchase, the original name had been something special to her owner so we decided out of respect to leave that name in his ownership.

In coosing a name we wanted to express our feelings about what we were doing when out sailing, we certainly did not want anthing pretentions or grand, to express our persuit of fun. So we came up with the name of 'OUT TO PLAY'.

We have since taken 'our' boatname to another boat and when we get our next boat in a couple of weeks we intend to use the name again.

Seen on a mobo in the Solent area - "Elizalot" and another in Ocean Village another mobo "Damn the expense"

The bought I have just bought is called "Diablo" (apologies to previous owners).

Quite like the sound of it however I am tempted to change it because of the Devil connotations. Any suggestions ?

Probably going to regret asking !!

Wasn't sure who Van Helsing was so I checked out the website...

www.vanhelsing.net

Bit OTT in terms of the imagery. And might get a bit scary in a blow.

Being a bit of a wimp was thinking more on the cool, calm and collected lines really..

Last boat was called Barnacle Bill but the missus insists its a girl this time.

How about Overdraft or Overdraught, not only for what it causes but how it floats when the booze has been loaded?
