Boat names

There seems to be something of a fashion for naming boats after Spirits...... e.g Spirit of Apricot, Spirit of Gaia, Spirit of Glenans, Spirit of Auchtermuchtie' etc.

How come I haven't seen adorning the polished pages of Yachting Monthly, or even the svelte Yachting World, some glistening slippery beauty called 'Spirit of Glenfiddich', 'Spirit of Bruichladdich', or 'Spirit of Jack Daniels'....? Then, for the apothecaries among us, there's 'Spirit of Camphor'.... 'Spirit of Ammonia'.... 'Spirit of Vitriol'.... and the intriguing 'Spirit of Kephalosaron'.

Any advance of these...?

I guess you could call a boat White Spirit. It would have to be an AWB or a racer, unlike its wooden and beautifully varnished sister vessel, the good ship Turpentine.

No one pronounces it correctly, so we call her 'Seabright' on the VHF

The nearest I can remember was our Portuguese diving boat JB ( pronounced jota bay) which was a popular spirit brand at the time.

I made a custom bike and it needed a name to enter a show. The doner bike was a 1969 BSA, so I called it 'Spirit of 69'

Got a few laughs, anyway.

"In some Native American spiritual traditions the Great Spirit or Wakan Tanka is a term for the Supreme Being".

Easy to misread.....

Whats your thoughts on changing a boats name, as a new owner might do? Is it still considered bad luck?
The one i am looking at has already had a name change and while the current name may have personal links to the current owner - it wouldnt have for me.

There are threads on the forum about the ceremonies required to change the name of a boat without incurring the wrath of Neptune..... Some of them are quite fun and all include a reasonable quantity of alcohol.

There is a White Spirit in our club, both a MAB and a racer (does very well on handicap). Generally known as Turps Substitute on our own boat.

About 20 years ago, I remember a boat in our local area named "SPIRIT of MIM". The owner was planning to retire in 1999.

No. Spirits of Salt is hydrochloric acid. Magnesium sulphate is Epsom Salts. Quite important not to mix them up, I should have thought.
