Laziness and stinginess - and also avoid sounding stupid on the radio.

Choose a name whose letters are made only of straight lines - easy to paint.

Choose a name with no repeating letters. It means you can buy one set of stencils and use them to mark your equipment.

Choose a name that people might get right when you say it on the radio, and do imagine the day where you might have to call "Maday 'Mid-life Crisis'" or the like.

In a previous discussion one poster reported seeing an expensive yacht named "Arm and a Leg" causing a bit of a laugh when it calls "Thames Coastguard, this is Arm and a Leg over".

And to us Scots - I must say the winner is the Mirror Dinghy called "Maid Freya Kitt".
