Boat Name Change ?

I'm very new to boating and have just bought a Birchwood 37.

I would like to change the name of the boat, hopefully without having it taken out of the water and employ the services of a professional sign writer. Can anyone offer any advice how this could be done to a reasonable standard within the constraints previously mentioned.

Get vinyl cut. It comes on a carrier backing. Someone on here does it or any signmaker. They use it on vehicles all the time.

You can either buy stick on lettering or use the seaman's trick of printing off fancy lettering from a PC then use a pin or school compass to prick little holes all round the outline of the lettering until it looks like the edge of a postage stamp. Then tape the printout to the bit of boat you want to write on and rub coloured chalk dust through the perforations thus giving you a chalk outline you can trace over with a fine paint brush before filling in the rest of each letter. You may require a dinghy to sit in whilst painting the bow if you don't want to hang upside down off the deck.

Lots of entries for boat name labels on e-bay.
These are sticky back plastic between semi-sticky paper sheets. I’ve had good results with smaller boats (< 20ft) made of GRP
Read the size details carefully as they often specify a maximum length and height so a long name may be smaller letters than you expect and vice versa.
I’m using words to describe the “Feckless” pictures above.

I was told I would need the services of a sign writer, but from what you say that may not be the case.

I was aware of the need for the services of an Off licence for this procedure, but not that of a Priest, that's was a surprise

The Feckless name cost me about £15 for the two I supplied a JPG by email to a sign-maker in Kendal and picked it up a couple of days later.
I'm just about to order the crew names for my car from the same bloke. The last ones cost about £10. Different names each side and including the drop shadow.
They stick very well. I've just taken those off after about 8 months to repaint the bonnet and they took a while to pick off.

Just checking that you realise there is more to it than just sticking a new name on. The cost of the vinyl then becomes insignificant.

GAJ52: sign-writing in the traditional sense is almost dead. Look at almost any sign-written van and it'll be vinyl, as described above. Looks good and and it stays stuck.

+1 for funky monkey. They were very helpful, sent proofs of what I wanted with actual sizes marked so I could double check the fit etc and then delivered the final vinyls the next day. Very good prices too. They went on really easily and look great. Definitely recommended!
