You know that old, silly superstition about not changing a boat's name? No, I don't believe there will be a problem, either, but just in case, are there any silly old routines I could perform, just to be on the safe side.

You betcha or Neptune will bite your arse! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

At your renaming ceremony you will need a dignitary to say the words 'I name this ship etc.' She will then spill spirit of some kind over the bows. When half the spirit has gone from the bottle she takes a swig. Then it is passed around the attending throng who also swig from the bottle. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Much prefer the one that involves someone dancing around the boat whilst naked /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif though not sure who I would want to do it /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Don't want to spoil your fun etc but.....

By renaming your boat you will lose all of its history.

You have to decide whether thats important or not, whether the boat's life has any relavence....

Your decision.

A few years ago, I was 'accosted' by a swimmer just off Skomer Island, he spluttered that the boat was once owned by his Dad..

A great conversation and tea was had, we learned a lot about the boat and its history.

Just yesterday, in the Scuttlebuck forum, a boat in trouble off Devon named Delyth was recognised as a Swansea boat, and again its history and previous owners were of great interest to all.

Just to say by remaing a boat you loose all of that.

But its your decision......

They say you have to sail it backwards, whilst doing something odd, can't remember.

Good luck anyway.

Just my tuppence worth

plus, in spite of all the above voodoo stuff, naked dancing, champagne, etc, changing the boats name will bring a eternal curse on your craft!!!!

I know. I would NEVER again change a name, and now will only buy a boat if the name suits us as well......

So all you muppets who name your boat things like....

Premier Cru.

Loadsmoney

Fraid Knot

etc.

Just remember what it does to your resale value!

Re: Boat name change? Various Options for You

Very common in MN. Turks bought UK VLCC which became the largest ship on Turkish register. Couple of Goats were slaughtered down the anchor hawse pipes and national flag draped over bridge for handover and renaming party. Turks found they could not run the Engines ( steam turbines, one morning we found them trying to undo the boiler water drum access door when it had 60 bar behind it) so couple of our redundant engineers had deck chair jobs to sail on her to advise how to start her up again whenever the Turks blacked the ship out.
For yachts I just notify the Register of Ships in Cardiff and get out the paint pot.
