Am I the last person to realise that that Cravendale Milk has a long 'unopened' shelf life?

Most of us are aware of the difficulty of getting proper milk in foriegn parts and how horrible UHT is in tea. I was amazed when it was pointed out that this stuff lasts 3 weeks or so.

I had never bought it as I usually get organic milk, so am pretty impressed by this.

Is that long unopened period while keeping it refrigerated? as opposed to UHT that does not need refrigeration.

It lives in the fridge in the shop, so I assume that's a refrigerated shelf life.

If it was 3 weeks at room temperature I'd be interested, but normal milk lasts long enough for my needs - surely there aren't that many of us who don't touch land for three weeks at a time?

I admit I'm not often in a situation these days where I need to buy milk in another country - but how hard can it be? Surely milk is a staple in pretty much any European cuisine?

"Moo" organic UHT is almost indistinguishable from fresh milk, and you can leave it on the boat all summer - appx 6month shelf life. Seen it in all the big supermarkets.Try it, we use it at home now since it has no "UHT" taste , is good in tea, cereal etc,etc No connection, just satisfied milk customer.

The Tesco skimmed sterilised stuff tastes fine in tea and coffee, and it's in a plastic bottle not a carton so easier to store on the boat. When I was in Saudi the UHT milk was horrible but the skimmed variety was the most palatable.

Full fat fresh milk lasts longer than semi-skimmed last longer than skimmed. Odd but true.

We don't have milk on the boat. We don't drink tea and we have coffee mate in coffee. To be honest I think coffee mate makes a lovely cup of coffee!

But how's it better than "normal" fresh milk I take on the boat? That's generally good for a week, which is longer than I'm going to be between shops in normal coastal sailing.

Maybe for those cruising deepest darkest Scotland?

For a serious offshore voyage, sure (though would you have the fridge space?), but I think that's very much a minority activity.

Well it was just a suggestion !

I'm sure there all all sorts of reasons to vary ones choice of milk. I works for me up in Scotland where my boats is. I can stock up for a 2 week trip with milk at the one supermarket whithin 50 miles and know that it will be as good as 'fresh' milk.

Evidently not for all cruising choices tho!

We cheat and use Kenco 2 in1, or if you take sugar 3 in 1. Coffee and whitener in the same little individual sachet. And it doesn't go lumpy. Tough if you want tea.

second choice : uht full fat or semi skimmed

yuck choice : skimmed and any powdered milk.

We use condensed milk for tea and coffee; equivalent to milk plus one sugar.
In the plastic jars or tubes; available in France as well.

Proper milk is available in France at most supermarkets now days IMO.
