Boat milk

It's all very well for you blokes with fridges, but for us with real boats rather than floating luxury apartments milk is a bit of a problem.
A few possible strategies:
1. I use a wine cooler standing in the little galley sink, which just holds a 1 pint plastic milk bottle. Covered with a wet rag it keeps reasonably cool for up to 24 hours in the summer.
2. Freeze a couple of bottles of milk at home beforehand. They will take 12 - 24 hours to slowly thaw (during which time you can periodically decant enough for cups of tea). May even last longer with a properly insulated cold box (which menas you have to make one yourself from ply and styrofoam or Kingspan).
3. For longer periods, buy UHT milk in individual sachets from the supermarket. I agree with all the comments about the taste (though some makes are much better than others), but in extremis it's better than black tea.

there's been a test here in holland with Lidl fresh full fat milk.. which was still completely drinkable after having stood 3 weeks (!) outside the fridge
worth a try maybe ?

its been kept in the fridge/cold shelf in the store but will keep outside the fridge for several weeks.. this is not the UHT or skimmed milk but the 'normal' fresh kind.

the test was quite simple actually .. buy 10 different brands in cartons.. put them on a shelf and test the box after 2,3,4,5,6,7, etc days... most were spoiled after a few days but the Lidl milk was still OK after 3 weeks

and appearently this is how they do it

Powdered milk every time!

Never realised there were so many milk aficionados. My lifestyle makes the procurement and keeping of liquid milk a real pita, so happily use Lidl's dried skimmed milk whether in the truck during the week or the boat or camper van at weekend. It mixes easily with both tea and coffee tasting (to me) fine. Even use it every morning when I have my museli (even truckers eat healthily sometimes)!

Lidl dried

+1 for Lidl dried skimmed milk.
I've always been fussy about my milk- HATE that UHT taste, hate cream or even a slightly creamy taste, not even that fond of full fat fresh milk; so at home I always bought small amounts of semi-skimmed fresh practically every day. However, recently I've been preparing to go long term cruising and although I have a fridge on board I'm assuming that at some point it'll break or be too power hungry, so I've been experimenting with various milks and milk substitutes- and Lidl powdered dried skimmed milk has come out on top so far, especially if you only make up a small quantity at a time. I haven't tried Moo or Cravendale, so thanks for the heads up..

another vote for soya products (though you need to heat it if you want it in coffee - it curdles otherwise).

my best soya secret is porridge made with vanilla soya milk. mmmmmmmmmm........

I started having sweetened soya on the cornflakes and a banana each morning in an attempt to keep the cholesterol down.
I've been taking my coffee black but interested to hear about heating the soya up.
Will try
