From today we are left at the mercy of IPC with the demise of Boat and Sportsboat. There is now no practical mag' for motor boats at all. A sad day for marine publishing and all the employees at CSL who are suddenly jobless.

And readers. IPC should buy it (Boat) and stop pretending that "Practical Boat Owner's" Staff are interested in Power Boats. They Should re-name PBO into "Practical Sail" and BOAT into "Practical Power"

They stopped pretending a while ago.
They changed the strap line from "for sail and power" to "britains best selling sailing magazine"
They told neither subscribers nor advertisers when they changed their focus. ( I WAS both)
They then did a marina guide where they excluded all marinas without saily boat air draft just to rub it in.
They then tried to charge 6 months when I cancelled my advert.
Shame.

Hmmm believe it or not news to me ... And a shame if true

From the CSL website:

Following a meeting of the board on the 17th of October, we have taken the decision to suspend production of both Boat Mart and Sports Boat and Rib magazines until a further decision to publish is taken in Spring 2012.

During these difficult times it is apparent that all companies involved in the industry have needed to tighten their allocations and efficiencies. As a result of this our target revenues have suffered substantially and we feel the products are unsustainable in their print form through the winter months.

As part of our forward strategy, we will be refocusing our efforts towards developing the brands via our digital platforms.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their continued support of the products and hope our alternative outlets will continue to provide a greater level of interaction and
response rate.

And here was me just about to place an order for an annual subcription.

Still taking orders though http://www.mysubcare.com/magazine_particulars.asp?new=y&magid=CL1&name=Boat Mart which I find confusing.

And yes, whilst the publishers CSL mention the demise on their website, there's nothing to indicate anything out of the ordinary on the Boat Mart home page http://www.boatmart.co.uk/.

So, are CSL saying it's still available electronically but not in hard copy in the shops?

Reading the comments on the SB&R forum, the news has only just reached staff too, so no surprise that website and subscriptions have not yet been updated. They are 'reviewing' in the spring, but I find the comments about being unsustainable in winter months strange - don't know about everyone one else, but I'm more likely to read in the winter months!

I subscribed to the digital copy of SB&R mainly because the digital subscription was keenly priced (£15 for 12months) and the local newsagents never seemed to have the hard copy. MBM/PBO I buy the paper based version because I prefer the format and it's always available. It would be a great shame if all magazines ultimately end up digital only.

It's surprising that there is such little focus for the 'hands on' owners of small mobo's as there are a lot out there and as said elsewhere, the sub-30' practical aspects don't seem well targeted. But perhaps as a sub 30', DIY mobo owner, I'm biased??? :D

Thats one reason why I changed from MBM to PBO, fed up with seeing + 30ft boats with nice price tags, and very little for the DIY mobo owner.

Cheers

Stu - a 23ft DIY mobo owner !

Maybe they're talking in terms of advertisers, not magazine buyers?

Shame.

I was a PBO subscriber for many years even though the sections in the mag devoted to powerboating were often quite meagre and sometimes downright patronising. When it became clear that powerboaters were not the sort of reader they wanted, I cancelled my subscription. There has to be room in the market for a practical powerboating mag. After all there are a lot more things to fix on a powerboat and I'm guessing powerboaters spend more on fixing and maintaining their boats than yotties

I've just found out that RIB magazine has rebranded itself as Powerboat and RIB and intends to cover all motor boats up to 45 feet with lots of practical content. I'm looking forward to seeing the first copy. There's hope for us yet!

the first copy is out, issue 104 ( Feb-12 )...................got mine last week

Me too, not a bad mag and I'm sure I recognised a contributor from SB&R so hopefully some or all have transferred across.

I have it in the car but not looked it other than a passing glance yet.

combination of Rib Mag and SB&R sounds like a good prospect for us smaller boaters! still get MBY to look at the pretty pictures tho!!
