Having searched for thread titles "intruder alarm" and "burglar alarm", I still haven't got any idea on how to protect the cabin/living quarters on my little Viking 20.

Regardless of what sort of boat it is, once scum are through the main cabin door/s, what's to stop them making off with your valuables? Yes, I know strong additional locks might be a deterent, but I'm looking for a "shed" type alarm I guess that emits a very loud noise when someone enters.

Having seen countless boats in marinas over the years, very few, if any have any form of security system. We buy a £10k car and get a Thatcham approved alarm as standard. We buy a boat costing £100's of thousands and we get nothing.

So what's your suggestions and answers guys?

Edit...... Just had a thought - infra red beam across the doorway linked to a hidden siren. Key operated so you just turn it off before entering. Sounds too simple I guess.

We have a Boat Monitor alarm installed, very nice piece of kit that can be controlled by mobile phone.

We have it linked to PIR, door strips, smoke alarms, low battery warning and geo fencing. Can't remember cost but worth it.

An alarm is only any good if someone is going to investigate when it goes off. There is a school of thought that leaving nothing worth pinching on board and limited physical security to prevent damage can be a better option.

I used these pressure mats strategically placed under the deck carpets and linked to the 120dB alarm on a boat I used to own. Very effective in forcing the two scrotes who jumped onboard in broad daylight to leg it as soon as the alarm kicked in ( - there was a 10 second delay to allow you to isolate the alarm - assuming you knew where the switch was. ;))

Little Ship has a 12volt "Autodial Intruder Alarm" PIR and a door switch fitted. It will call my mobile if activated and can be reset or set via the phone, handy if you want to allow somebody access if your not there. When activated it has a little mic so you can listen and I have fitted a 100 db siren.

I cant remember the name of who sold it to me...but,

how about this ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GET-Wirel...m-with-Auto-Dial-INTRUDER-ALERT-/110907250145

The problem, as you have identified, is firstly whether anyone will take any notice and secondly, if the intruders grab and run. There are all sorts of systems that will set the alarm off or video cameras that will show the little scrote's in action however, prevention is better than cure.
Not sure if the following might help with your boat and maybe some larger boat owners will find it of interest.
When we bought our house in France, the previous owners left a very comprehensive alarm system which included a "fogger". Basically, this is a device which fills a room (or boat cabin) with something similar but denser, to dry ice. It is sudden, quite noisy, blanketing and effective in making the intruders run away but clears away after about ten minutes. Examples below are for shops etc but the one we have in our house is a much smaller system which would easily fit onto a boat. Apart from an American company called GOST, I can't find any others specific to boats but a Google search might help.

we have an electro magnet thingie under the main sliding hatch connected to a very noisy sounder. the whole thing is armed via a removable key concealed in the cockpit. we did also have a strobe light but it was removed due to gps needing its place

GET Wireless BURGLAR Alarm System with Auto Dial INTRUDER ALERT (#110907250145) £39.9

Now I'm not so sure:confused:

^ The one above uses a land line for dialing so no good for boat use.

Something like this is probably what you meant.
E-bay link
It uses the GSM mobile phone system for alerts and also sends a picture. That way at least you can phone the marina/police with certainty of an intruder (or overflowing bilge :o)

I work on the basis that if someone really wants to break in then they will and if no one is around to respond to an alarm, I think it's pretty pointless. Besides I would have thought most alarms very easy to get around on a boat.

What about a shotgun strapped to a seat with the trigger tied to the door handle or just wire the door handle to a car ignition coil :D

Seriously though, I'd like the idea of knowing that someone has broken in only because it's less likely to ruin a planned day out, other than that, I'm not sure it's worth it. It might even be easier just leaving the cabin door unlocked and having nothing inside but even I might find that a little hard. Besides, in this day and age, my fuel's probably worth more than anything I keep aboard!

But if you come up with good system, perhaps post some details back here.

Theres a security device product review coming out in the December edition of MBM, might help you decide.

Hi,

I have just finished an article for Motor Boat Monthly, (through forumite "Neale") in which it covers the in's and out of the Nautilarm system, although the report covers all aspects of what is good and bad of boat alarms generally.
It's going to be published shortly, might help with any decisions before you buy.

No connection to company, just a guy with a boat with an alarm on it
