Hi All, GJW have increased my insurance premium this year from £307 to £318 for Bizzy bee (Sealine S28) even though I have made no claims and my qualifications have improved this year from 'experience only' (other than VHF license) to holding Power Boat Level 2, Advanced Power Boat and First Aid certifications.

Any recommendations please to provide a quality service equal to or better than GJW at a premium less than I have been quoted?

thanks Gary

I had the same problem with them, 5% NCD - still increased premium, then 10% NCD - same, 15% NCD.........

I found St Margarets, now Haven Knox Johnson, more reasonable.

Gary, I got a couple of quotes, then got my current insurer to price match, saved about £100. Your insurance sounds good value by the way.

Not sure that qualifications necessarily lessen the risk to your insurers to any great extent. Having bits of paper is all well and good but little beats experience IMHO.

Your premium doesn't seem too bad to me but there's no harm in giving them a bell. Worth the cost of a call.

I'm with GJW and my premium went up a bit this year but they've been very good with me as I have an agreed value on the boat and when I moved this year from the non-tidal Thames to the Solent and vastly increased my cruising cover they didn't put the premium up which I thought was incredibly fair.

My premium went up from about £110 to £140 in a couple of years. Just before my last renewal, (where they quoted £140), they called to see if I was ready to renew. I said I wasn't and would call if I wanted to. She parted by saying they might be able to better their quote by changing the excess or something.

On the day it was due I called to renew and asked what they could reduce the premium to if I upped the excess from £100 to £500. She said the max excess they do is £300, so I asked for that. She went off for a few minutes and, when she returned she said they had reduced the premium to £95, and the excess would remain at £100. I quizzed this to make sure I'd heard correctly, paid the money, and waited for the paperwork.

Sure enough, the cover was the same, the excess was £100, and the premium was £95.

Perhaps merely asking for a higher excess suggests I am a good/better risk - who knows?

You get what you pay for with insurance ! GJW are a very good company & when you need them they will not shy away like many others would. No connection other than being a very satisfied customer for many years.
Ps. it is always worth giving them a call, they are normally quite helpful.

You may wish to read this thread.......and in particular, post #76 from jfm

Gary,
I am with GJW but, having read recent thread (presume the one pointed to by Pinnacle) I got an indicative quote from Y Yacht insurance and it was cheaper than GJW (which I renewed in August 2014)
Easy to get a basic quote - they don't need your inside leg measurement
Cheers

gary read the recent threads on insurance just because its cheaper does not make it a decent policy. I paid £200 more this year but I will sleep better at night knowing the cover I now have compared to what I had,

For most of us our boats are possibly the second most expensive item we own other than our homes so make sure you get good cover it does not matter how cheap it is if they wont pay out for a huge claim when needed

The premium only goes up if your boat value stays the same.
Adjust the overall value down a little to account for depreciation, and the premium reduces :)

We've been with Bishop Skinner for years. Premium always competitive and the one claim dealt with well. Bd very careful dealing with brokers or insurers who are not boat specialists.

Obtain a cheaper quote , they ask for proof and match it , always have with me.
Afraid I zm a great believer now that current clients get a raw deal anywhere , new business is more important to companies . With me my clients repeat business is king and always will be. What's the point in searching for new leads when you already have them. Look after what you have had always been my motto.

+1 Paul. In normal business, your current clients are king. With industries like insurance, utilities, banks etc, new clients are king, to be subsidised by current ones. Not good!

My claims experience with GJW concurs. Wouldn't use anyone else.
