Boat in build pics (Squadron 78)

So....

when all the electrics pack up the hydraulics leak their last drop, the holding tanks overflow, the electronic packs and fly by wire decide it's all over....

launch the sail boat and tow her back :)

Well you wouldn't actually need to launch it. Just step the mast, trim the sails, and you're off :-)

Never mind...

the laser, you could probably have a nice pair of contessa's one either side with their keels in the water, dispense with the stabalisers?? :)

nice garmin screens BTW... happy with them??

That aside, what's the "spoiler porthole"? Even the Italian version doesn't help.

Its Ferretti-speak for the hydraulic hatch to the lazarette under the bathing platform. For some reason I can't understand, they call this lazarette a 'spoiler'

Masts

Is that mushroom shaped aerial on the stbd mast a standard status / glomex omnidirectional tv aerial?

If so, I'm very confused! Why? - when you have those impressive top-of-the-range tracvisions?:confused:

(Apologies if I've mistaken it for another fantastic hi-tech gadget that looks remarkably similar!)

Yup TB it's a Status TV aerial. I've no idea why either. I was suprised to see it there. I can't see any reason why you'd watch TV via the aerial as opposed to thru the Tracvision system (which is their M7 system, btw)

I didn't want to interfere cos I've interfered a lot already but if it were up to me I'd dump the TV aerial and put all the GPS mushrooms and navtex aerial inside the dummy M7 dome, and clean it all up. No worries though; I'm happy with it as is. I'll put a radar reflector (ugly things) inside the dummy dome

looking fantastic jfm but they're going to have to go some for an early dec completion. I was going to ask about a handrail on the internal flybridge steps but having seen the rendering, i see there is one at least on one side. Is there a handrail on the other side 'coz it looks like a hell of a drop to the galley floor if you miss your footing? Fly dash looks fab. Did you think about pairing the guages and what are those guages off to the s/b side? Cool electrical control board too. Have you got a close up of that?

it will be complete!

Would it not be reasonable for somebody at Fairline to take photos at agreed intervals, perhaps every 2 weeks or even every week, and email them to you?

Why dont you set a still camera up on a tripod mount somewhere on a beam in the factory with an auto timer to take a photo at regular intervals until she's finished - then play in fast forward, and watch the whole build in 10 minutes?

That would be vvv nice, though more happens inside than outside. Anyway, catch is, it is built in 4 locations, sort of moving slowly along from one end of the build shed to the other, so I'd have to move the camera. They have 4 in build at any one moment

I'm doing ok though, getting pics every 3 weeks or so. I just checked the folder and I have 547 in-build pics in high res. I've had to select only a few to post here. That's so far; I might have say 750 say when done, which is a pretty good build record and they show every major pipe and wire before being covered up

The pics above with the Laser were taken by Fairline and emailed to me (thanks guys!)

I'm surprised you need a radar reflector with a boat that size! Will it be an active type (e.g. Sea-Me etc)? They're quite compact and not quite so ugly. Then again, don't you have an AIS transponder with a ship of that size?

Agreed. RR is total waste of time. The whole superstructure and flybridge has hidden within it a big aluminium 4x2 box section space frame, for starters, plus there are 6 tonnes of cast iron in the engine room. But the boat will be coded and MCA stupid rules stipulate a RR. It'll be the cheapest passive one I can find. Yup, I have AIS transponder (Garmin) installed

Would be great to see them all when finished. Maybe photobucket? We could then put the pictures to a suitable soundtrack!!! Any suggestions what the music should be :)

:) OK, I'll try to upload them all at the end and make a fastmoving slideshow. Dunno about the music. Theme from Howard's Way? There hasn't been as much sex/drugs/rock n roll on my boat as in that series, but that'll soon be put right :)

I'm at factory in the morning (Friday) so might get a few more pics

How about Stephen bishop "the heart is so willing". Should be the soundtrack for all boat owners as it's the theme from......... ;)

look forward to the next installment!! :)

I know a young man who will do that for you... all original ... reasonable rates too!

I have a few more pics from a factory visit this morning, for those still following the plot. The boat is very well on its way to being finished 1 December though of course there is plenty to do. It occurred to me that most of the boatbuilding is behind panels and so even though the boat is perhaps 80% finished it still looks very much work in progress in those places where the finishing/trim panels are not installed, eg the photo of the saloon below. I’m only mentioning this because otherwise you might think it’s not very far on compared with last pics, even though it is actually way more advanced at a detailed level

Pic below shows outside. All deck fittings and teak rail are on. Second pic below is the transom hand rail which has been made to a custom design so the wooden rail bridges across the crew door rather than moving with the door

Here is a bit more deck gear. The switches are for deck lighting and 2x shore power master relays
P1010769.jpg

This pic shows the port side dedicated fender locker. There are 2 fender lockers like this plus 2 smaller ones, so all the boat’s fenders can quickly be stored out of sight, close to where they're needed, which is a very nice feature imho
P1010773.jpg

Flybridge hatch and custom design stairs
P1010784.jpg

Fly bar unit, all finished with 2 fridges + icemaker, grill, sink, gash bin all installed and ready to switch on
P1010785.jpg

General flybridge shots, showing the dash project
P1010786.jpg

P1010787.jpg

This pic is for those who were worried the steering wheel clashes with the throttle levers :-)
P1010776.jpg

Below is a geeky shot, inside the locker under the radar tower, showing all the wiring that goes up the radar tower plus some of the metalwork that supports the tower. This metal is thru bolted to the aluminium box section space frame structure built into the superstructure so the radar tower is sitting on that spaceframe, rahter than the GRP shell
P1010782.jpg

Here’s the saloon – as I said it looks very unfinished but there is loads done in here when you get up close
P1010746.jpg

Two shots of master cabin: first one is starboard window under which there will be a sofa, and second is the headboard end of the bed.
P1010756.jpg

P1010758.jpg

Just to explain what’s happening with the master cabin, all the curves have been taken out. Pic below shows the standard sq78 m/cabin, but on mine they’ve redesigned everything from scratch. The curves in that big bulkhead, the bureau desk under the window, the foot of the bed, and the ceiling panels, are all being replaced with straight lines and 90deg (radiused) corners.. That’s a fairly major bit of customisation and is a good example of how far Fairline are going with their semi custom offering. No other UK builder will change the footprint of and every bit of furniture in a cabin like this and none of the mainstream Europeans will do it. Other than Fairline, you have to go to a bespoke yard to get this level of customisation anywhere. (Scuse the awfully made bed; Tracey Emin dropped by :-) )

Next 2 pics are behind the lower helm dash. In the first you can see the back of the Garmin plotter (grey box with cooling fins) to get your bearings, and you can see there is chilled air (the silver ducts) to the fanned vents in centre of dash, just like in a car. The second pic shows a few of the zillions of conduits with pull throughs that are all over the boat. You can run a wire from anywhere to anywhere if you want to install kit later, without having to remove panels.

The Lumishore underwater lights were powered up and being tested. The Fairline guys were stunned at how bright these are. Each one of these lights is about 150% more lumens on its own than ALL FOUR of the big OceanLED lights that Fairline normally fit put together. And I have 6 of them installed! The electrical engineer was amazed that the whole set was drawing only 11amps (at 24v) which proves how clever Lumishore have been in getting their lumens per watt figure so high
P1010763.jpg

Quick close up of galley sink below (I've no idea why; it was on the camera :))
P1010765.jpg

Finally, one of the shower rooms is below. I’m really pleased with these. Fairline always do great bathrooms but these are particularly nice even by their standards. The customisations here are a chocolate brown avonite on the boomerang shower seats (instead of the usual teak) plus villeroy+Boch sanitaryware, and teak flooring which is WIP. It all looks beautifully installed when you get close up but that’s hard to see in this pic and everything is covered in masking to stop it getting scratched
P1010760.jpg

That’s all for now. I’m back there on 4 November when the boat will be in the test tank for some near-final systems testing, and I’ll be with my surveyor who is going to tonnage survey it so I can be part 1 registered asap after I pay the final installment on Dec 15th
