Boat in build pics (2013 Fairline Squadron 78)

View attachment 30245

I machined these today and managed to get one knurled (just) but I'll have to get myself some new knurling wheels. It won't be this weekend, but should be with you by the end of the week.
I've got no idea what they are or what they're for though. :D

Ooh thanks Col. They look fab. Thanks vm. I have PMed you.
They are to screw the foot plates of the aft deck table pedestal to the deck. The deck has s/s "top hats" upside down with M10 blind tapped hole, to receive these screws. Sort of a bit like on azi picture below, that I just grabbed off the net. My table has a couple of different positions and is lifted right off for deck cleaning, hence the desire for knurled hand-turned screws. You can buy these things from catalogues but they always look and feel a bit crappy; properly made ones like yours are much neater.

Anyway, thanks again. It's very nice to have "forum made" parts on the boat. They'll be very much on view at the BMYS as the Swanwick 17-19 May 2013 show is offficially now called I think (British MY show).

No hijack intended.... i spose tis the nature of this sorta thread that we all hang about for more pix, really? I merely commented on the OB rating issue. Boats with mast have a MUCH lower OB rating afaik, usually zero due to the tendency of of any B's to wear wet weather gear, pull ropes and generally "muck in" with the generally pesky necessity of wafting about at the mercy of the elements under sail, instead of overpowering them with carefree use of fossil fuels. Yeah, I sailed round the world but secretly there's loads of motoring. Gotta use a sail sometimes cos there's some legs of over 4k nm which yerknow, would be a lot of jerrycans....
No worries at all imho tcm. Aesthetics/OB rating of a boat are/is pretty central to the design and build tbh :D :D

a few Q's J,
- what kind of strainers are these for the engines , anything special about them apart from looking really nice ?
just interested, might need to change mine next winter or so,
the "sieves" are totally corroded, and one of the covers doesn't fit smooth (never did), so its probably time to replace the strainers and these big seacocks
- Carling switches; do you know a supplier who has all models / flavours in stock, and can do the custom labelling ? Changing the switches on the lower helm station is on my long todo list, and can't find them here locally, nor Farnell, ...
- What VHF will you have ? anything special ? I asume Gramin,
my Icom 601 is lost in transportation for reprogramming the mmsi code,
was planning to order a 603, same size, unless I can find a good reason to buy something else,

I hope you don’t mind that I copy your good and well thought idea’s :)

quick note,
after much negociation (mainly with myself) we had finally decided for Quick led lights (we tested the last product version, as could be seen at Metz, etc...)
just stumbled over a big box in the hall, they have just arrived.
thanks for the tip, remember more then a year ago now :)
Hi Bart
The strainers are italian Guidi, ionio series. 3inch BSP pipe size. Guidi are proper high quality italian items made of real bronze and nickel plated. If you were putting new strainers on a Canados, these would be very appropriate, and I'm sure MapisM would agree. www.guidisrl.it

Carling contura switches are available all over the www including eBay. They are used on dashboards of many boats as I'm sure you know. If you buy catalogue actuators (actuator= the top actual rocker, that you buy separately from the switch body) you get a big range of symbols to choose from, though sometimes it isn't enough. The actuators on M2 are custom spray painted then laser etched with red backlighting by www.axoncomponents.com. Hover your mouse over "switches" on their home page to see the back lighting effect they can make. Axon is a great company for custom dashboard work and they made several panels on both M1 and 2

I have Garmin VHF 300i on both mothership and tender, with wifi handset on flybridge mounted on a charging cradle. You have to have one wired handset, and the others can be wifi. I also have a separate Garmin AIS 600 transponder. I think all garmin is changing from grey to black and all the grey stuff on my dash that you can see in pics above will be switched for black in next few weeks. The Garmin integrates nicely and for example if you tap your finger on an AIS target on the chartplotter a little dialogue box appearts and you can dsc call the target by tapping the touch screen. I have never actually done that of course, but it seems a nice trick feature :)

Quick interior LED lighting is really good. I think I posted about this ages ago. I had it on a caribbean charter yacht a while ago and I thought they produced really nice quality light. I think you will really like them. The latest from Foresti + Suardi (Fairline standard fit) is pretty good too. I have gone for Cantalupi's ultra high CRI at considerable upgrade cost, something like £6k, and it is very nice stuff - really pleased with it. All these LEDs are now much better (higher CRI) than a few years ago. Match2 is 100% LED - no incandescent lighting at all. It will be great to see just 15amps @24v consumed on lighting when anchored, instead of 40Amps!

No worries John and thanks for all the useful PM's.
Henry and Sharon could tell you how important it is to have the table securely bolted down, especially with me on board, think of lumbering lump getting up, knocking table and various coffees and cakes being scattered across the aft deck.

Hi Bart,

Did you find an online store for the Quick's or did you buy them locally? JFM mentioned that the Cantalupis in M2 were about £80 a pop, if my memory serves me right. Would you care to share the price on the ones you got? I'm asking as I'm looking to replace some of mine.

Agree with you wakeup. Endorsed by JFM has a nice ring to it and surely could now be valuable :D

I think JFM's seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of boating technologies and practical experience of actually owning and helming super yachts is a fairly rare combination.

Got to say Match I looked fantastic but Match II is even better! Can't wait to see some fully completed pictures and videos in the near future. Perhaps summer will arrive when Match II is launched?

I buy them through my business (OB Vans) straight from the distributor, prices are good,
I'll mail you the prices later (I'm at the boat)
I have used models: Kai, Sonia, Yoko, Nikita, and a few Secret and Jacob

Yes I saw a Simrad add for their new VHF with optional wifi handset, could be usefull i thought, so thats why my Q.

I like the Quick led lights now, the problem was that my two first delivery's (for testing) were old stock from the distributor.
I noticed that the lights at the Quick booth at Mets, looked much nicer, so I asked about it; and the manager confirmed about quality improvemenst lately, and he proposed to exchange my old model lights (the pcb's),

thanks again for very usefull advice !

JFM, very nice. Only a week to shipping? I guess with the load being over 44 tonnes, it needs a Vehicle Special Order?

Yup, police are fully involved. As are utility companies to remove roadsigns, streetlights, and things in middle of narrow roads. Info here: http://www.suffolk.police.uk/newsandevents/newsstories/2013/march/largeloadonthemove.aspx

I'm not impressed by the data though - I was hoping for more than 5.23m beam. Also I was hoping for less than 59tonnes with no fuel, and bear in mind the props, rudders, fuurniture, swim platform etc all travel on another large truck. Perhaps I'll come to regret all this customisation when the waterline has to be painted 300mm higher... :D

You need to get yourself down the gym pretty sharpish then.

Also consider a set of electronic scales which can be laid out on the bathing platform to check people as they get on board. We use a set which would be perfect in the CCTV packing area. You switch them on and an American bird says, "I'm ready". When you place something on the scales she reads out the weight. It wouldn't be too hard to get Hurricane to re-programme them a little.

"One hundred and two kilogrammes, you are too fat please step back onto the pontoon."

"Eighty two kilogrammes, the captain personally welcomes aboard."

Just a thought.

The other thing you could do is limit the amount of glass and liquid you keep on board. If it helps I can take any superfluous wine or champagne. Hey, think nothing of it friend, it's just the kind of guy I am. Always thinking of others :)

Henry :)

Don't you recall ticking the narrow beam option? :). She does sound a tad lardy. Can't be a police error.
The transport issues must be a monthly headache for Fairline surely? I guess this is the only route for the Sq78?

Seems a surprising time to do it. I'd assume for that kind of exercise they'd want it late at night when the roads are quiet, not 9 o'clock on a weekday morning. Or perhaps they don't have rush hour in east Suffolk? :)

Pete

AFAIK, Plod charges more for night time movements so better to hold up the good people of Suffolk whilst they go about their daily business than jfm pays a few more bob for his truck:D

I know the team that move these boats quite well, they use a very carefully planned route and should be good at it by now as they done this trip a few times now. A few months ago they blocked off a road for several hours when a hydraulic hose split on the trailer, you couldn't get at it with the boat in place.
