Agreed, except the new Raym replacement for G series, called Gs, announced same day, is equally good looking and similarly feature packed. http://www.raymarine.com/view/?id=6862

At least, the big screens (rebadged hatteland) are equally good looking: alas when it comes to the smaller 110mm square instrument displays the Garmins are much better looking than the Raymarines, which have gone a little bit wrong with their pin cushion shape, imho. No big deal tho

The Garmins big screens are brighter than the Raymarine's and have the best dimming of all - they go from 0.5 to 1200 nits. I think, but Toby can confirm, the Hatteland Raymarines go from 1 to 1000

Overall, if you are starting from scratch, it's a close call between Raym and Garmin and down to personal detail preferences I think. It's nice to see such a big refresh of all these products though. Also Garmin have dropped all their prices of 7000 series, by around $1000 per unit

Where have all those buttons gone that I really like on my old G Series.
This was one of the main reasons I went for the old G Series

Quickly switching between inputs is very important for me.

No you're not John. I thought it was ugly design when I saw it. The Raymarine equivalent for their new Gs series is much prettier. Somewhat strangely, the new Garmin big screens and little 110mm square screen look the biz, but this remote belongs on Flash Gordon's dashboard.

Oh, I don't know, I think it looks professional, businesslike. The sort of thing you might see on a tug or ferry's bridge.

I guess that while "professional seafarer" is a look I happen to like, it may not be appropriate for something as slick as Match.

Here's a bit of an update from factory today. Loads of very nice progress. The boat was craned into the test tank and will be there for a few days while they test all water-needing systems. This involves running engines, gensets, airco, testing instrumentation, etc. It will stay in over this weekend to check for weeps. Some general pics are below. Third pic shows Toby and Piers lovely horn whch they've tested and tell me is incredibly loud. (Actually the language was a bit more colourful and one of the guys had blood drips onto his collar )

Pics below show the custom crew cabin window, from outside then inside. It has created a huge amount of light in this cabin and I'm really pleased with this mod

Here are a few flybridge helm shots. The dash is nice though it will look different when finished. Two new Garmin 8000 screens will go on the right, and 6 or so new small Garmin instrument screens will replace the small grey GMI10 screens currently fitted. I'll probably put 5 of them in a line top right. All the new Garmin stuff will be black, so I got the Maretron screen (far left, and it's actually colour even though it looks a bit black/green LCD in the pics) in black and will swap the autoanchor casing for black, the (wireless - that's a lanyard not a wire) vhf for a new black one when Garmin release it, and probably change the Carling switch actuators for black ones. You can also see in these pics the custom triple seat set up (standard boat has 2 seats) set up so anyone can leave/enter their seat without anyone else having to move. Helmsman is far left and nav/screen man (or woman) is centre. The seats will be Recaros in grey sunbrella cloth

All the electrical stuff is very neat. The pics below show the Lumishore underwater lighting driver install with a breakers box at the left and 6x drivers across the centre, one of the "Clapham Junctions" where the mouse ducts meet, and the custom 60Hz 110v inverter to power US spec SubZero fridges

Below are a few engine room shots. 3rd one shows a simple custom mod whereby external air is drawn in from outside and squirted at face of genset air intake, to provide cooler air and get more power from the engine. The fan only runs when genset runs and can be turned off at dash. 4th pic shows hydraulic pack for stabs, thrusters and windlass:

They’re a bit hard to see without the wooden treads but these are the internal flybridge-to-galley stairs. Identical design with Match1’s except the welds have been ground out and the RHS is 5mm wall instead of 3mm to get a bit more stiffness

Below is lower helm, again awaiting all new Garmin gear. The plan is to have a 15inch screen on the right and a smaller screen (8 inch I think) far left

These pics show master cabin. Lots of joinery still to do in here The last pic shows the wall where a big Samsung Smart TV is going and the removeable panel gives me access to cables and is the part into which I will cut a brush-sealed slot for the electric swing-out actuator mechanism to poke through

And the saloon – plenty of joinery to be done in here too!

This is the port side Sleipner stabiliser actuator mech, under the floor of the walk-in wardrobe in master cabin

That’s it for now. The boat in front of mine on the line is about to leave for Ipswich and sea trials, and mine is something like 6-7 weeks from that point. Not long to go. I’m going to see the tender mods tomorrow so I’ll post a few pics of that afterwards

Tee hee. Well, I thought it would be being on board and using it (esp being remote places at sea and quiet anchorages), and it is, but I gotta say that the building project comes a close second in terms of enjoyment. The Fairline factory team (designers/engineers/constructors) do such a nice job and it is a lot of fun seeing it being made. It's also nice to know your own boat and have a broad understanding of the wiring and piping runs, how it is screwed together, how to unscrew it, where all the machinery is located, etc.

Plus it is nice to think of new ideas and try them out, and see them work (or, er, fail ). Things like the extra windows, white decks, staircases, lighting mods, etc. The other thing is I am very fussy about dashboards and I think most builders do not get them right. A lot of owners don't care because they employ skippers at the 24m size but if you are an owner-driver the dash matters. So this gives me a chance to get the dash just how I want it and I quite like that part becuase as you know you spend quite a lot of time at the dash. The timing has worked out really well in terms of flukily just being in sync with Garmin's new 8000 series dashboard gear.

Essex Boatyards have been a big help in this as well as Fairline. Allen there is a complete master of GRP work. He has taken a stack of Fairline's GRP mouldings and modded them, then returned them to the factory for fitment on the boat. I enjoy that part - a few years ago I honestly wouldn't have thought you could rework GRP shapes as much as you can when you know someone like Allen

All good fun. But the big downside is that you cannot trade in boats this size. No dealer can buy them. So you have to sell, and then start the next one, and that costs a season of missed boating. This Match2 is therefore a keeper for a few years because i dont fancy missing a season's boating in the near future

I hope you (and any others on the forum) can come on board and have a look round, if I have her in Solent for a couple of weeks shakedown in late May/ early June. Timing is all a bit uncertain for now

Blood? Well, we've been given permission to sound the start and the end of each day at Seawork 2013, with a horn of our choice! The choice is between a Class 1 single trumpet 110Hz using 3 phase mains, or maybe a 4 trumpet array for a mega-yacht (your next boat...). The problem is ensuring no-one is near at the time!

Can you assuage curiosity about the two stainless units in the water just aft of the swim platform please ? They look like the top end of a Kverneland 8-furrow reversible prairie plough, but.....

I'm sure JFM will be along to correct, but I think these are for the hi-lo bathing platform.

Super update JFM, and a serious milestone to do the tank test. As you say, the devils in the detail, and there is a huuuuuge amount of detail on new Match. Disappointing to hear that there will not be an M3 for some years.
