I guess on boats significantly lighter than Match, the "bouncing" frequency will be higher, so touch screens might be more difficult to use for us with smaller vessels?

Hmmm. I'm aware of how they work. I'd dispute your sentence above though, along the same lines as Sarabande had in mind earlier (I think). First, it's perfectly possible that different papers have different conductivities, making your "test" a bit sporadic, and second it is possible to make a screen work "through" paper by simply increasing the potential of the base electric charge applied to the touchscreen surface, but that would be a pointless thing to do other than to pass with flying colours your test.
A quality test has to be relevant. Your "touch through paper" quality standard is like someone inventing a quality test for cars of "Does it make good pizza?". Then to meet this test Skoda add a microwave oven into the dashboard, and claim it beats the "quality test" better than Mercedes. Sure, the Skoda would then cook pizza better than the Mercedes, just like Hatteland might work through cardboard better than Garmin, if you get my drift.

Yes, but I don't feel the need for anything special. I've only ever used them for goofing around tbh, not for actual searching. I have the standard spec one fitted, which (iirc, though i might be worng) is a twin bulb ACR (http://www.acrartex.com/products/catalog/searchlights/rcl100/) with pointpads (as opposed to josticks) at both helms. Have you got some sexy hitec lights in your range - please post some links as would be good to see what is available
The most annoying thing about this light, and it's a question of principle rather than anything practical, is that it is the only light on the whole boat that is incandescent. Everything else is LED or fluorescent

I agree, though you can debate whether hard buttons are equally hard to control in a small+fast boat in waves
As i said further up, this is "each to their own" territory. I happen to love the touchscreen stuff (esp Garmin's) but I can see that other folks prefer buttons or hybrids

Our local Search and Rescue teams have just started to use Samalites. This is the latest, with a 1000m beam. I have not seen it tested but the present 500m beam ones are astonishing. Made in the UK, as well, I believe.

I am also in the touchscreen camp, although Raf has an earlier Garmin with buttons, but I know from my car's touchscreen that it can be a bit hit and miss on the hoof. I would love to see match bounce. I'm guessing 0.5 Hz at max?

I am glad i bought the remote for my garmins, as I suffer from fingers like a blind cobblers thumbs. And with the remote, at least we are bouncing in tandem. Makes mine a lot easier to use at speed, although i am sure Match 2 will be far more of a leisurely nod than bounce...

I hate touchscreens on boats, in cars and in phones and tablets. IMHO touchscreens are an answer to a question nobody has asked. Unless you can brace your wrist it is difficult to accurately hit a touchscreen button in a bouncy boat or car. Give me a row of fat buttons anyday

They are to Search Light what Kahlenberg are to Horns. Though only available in Halogen (up to reasonably bright) and then Xenon, which is extremely bright.

actually we have (had) the same evolution and discussions in our industry
about one or more touchscreens on modern digital sound mixing consoles, instead of old fashion rotary knobs.
Apparently young chaps (like Jfm ;-) ) happen to get used to this much better then us old farts.
I'm still the only one at the company with No Iphone, and I hardly ever use our Ipad, ....
but I understand the wealth of extra possebility's you can get with a touch screen, and "just" software,
we all know that hardware knobs and buttons are much more expensive.
(I have to admid that my xmas present Iphone5 is still originally packed in its box on my desc
, I like the buttons of my Nokia E72 so much, and can operate them with one hand )

Quick update. Boatbuild is storming along; pic below from Monday this week. It is being launched in the test tank to run engines etc, this Friday. I'll try to go to factory and will get more pics then, and post them this weekend. Both sets of flybridge stairs will be in by then too. The tender dashboard project is also done, and I'll see that on Saturday

Despite being seniorish IT techy type I don't have smartphone either (nor Blackberry, ghastly things). I would quite like iPhone for skiing apps and it's also got a very respectable camera. But I'm too tight (company phone with international roaming does the job) I'll resist for a bit longer and I'm certainly not going to carry two phoes around (a biz one and personal one).

I have touch downstairs in the dry (via ipad), buttons upstairs where salt gets on the screen.

I find it bizarr in 2013 that mobile phone technology lacks such basic functionality as two separate numbers on the one sim card. One for work and one for personal use, with automatic call diversion of work number out of office hours so you don't get the classic annoying work related voice messages or calls late at night. Smartphones? Hmmm not as smart as they should be on 2013.
