Boat in build pics (2013 Fairline Squadron 78)

Excellent summary JFM, love the 'mangusta syndrome' analogy. (Sounds like it could be title of a thriller!). I think that your approach to making Match 2 the most desirable SQ78 through hard to retrofit and desirable options is a good one. Of course the white caulking shouldn't be to much of problem on the second hand market as it can be changed to black fairly easily :D:D:D Only kidding; It'll probably look fab and us doubters will have to eat humble pie.

Tee hee. Thnaks - I appreciate everyone's comments above and MapisM yes I can see you're right on the steel/ali thing.

The white caulk is the highest risk I'm taking on Match2 AdeOlly. The long range fuel, stabs, furniture improbvements, extra windows and all those other good things are no brainers in terms of costing little yet adding big resale premium. You can be very confident that there will be buyers out there who want those things - I sold M1 to the very first person who viewed her (ditto my previous Sq58 btw). But I'm sure there are many people out there who won't like white decks. It could be that the person who most likes everything else about M2 and will pay the biggest premium happens to hate the white, or it could be they'll love it. I have no idea, and it's a gamble. But I'm far from alone in liking the white and I think it will be well enough "on trend" in the next 10 years. You have far-out boats like Wallys with white caulk, but then you also have less extreme stuff like that first Princess 40m, several Huismans, that Boarnstream, etc etc , in white.

Not everything is planning for reseale of course. Far from it. Personally I think the white caulk will look stunning, set in context with all the other colours around it. And I'm looking forward to the dark wood/silver fabric nightclub interior. Must be having a mid life crisis :D :D :D

Must be having a mid life crisis
LOL, as Charlotte would say, "did you buy a Porsche yet?" :D
Re. white caulking, as much as I don't like it and I'm pretty sure I won't change my mind during this century, I actually don't think you're taking such a big risk.
The target customers for a boat like M2 are mostly pretty far from my mindset, and I agree that for them it's likely to be seen as another trendy thing, already now, and even more in the near future.
Possibly even more than big tanks and stabs.
I wouldn't put my money on dark wood and silver fabric, though - not to mention square shapes.
That's pretty much the sort of things whose fashion curve is as steep on its way down as it is on its way up, if not more.
Time will tell, of course...
...as long as in the meantime you will enjoy your time with M2, the rest doesn't really matter that much, does it?! :)

100% agreed. But new fabric on sofas is cheap as chips. I never said I had money on those items. It is the stabs, fuel, extra windows, special passerelle maybe, white deck (?) that make you the anti-depreciation money imho

I have never owned (or much wanted) a Porsche 911 so no MLC happening here just yet MapisM. But there is plenty of time I suppose :D :D

Agreed 1000% MapisM. All this anti-depreciation planning is a mere side show compared with nice times at sea and lunches/dinners at anchor with friends (er studying 911 brochures) :D

special passerelle maybe
Wazzat? Did I miss something?
If you're interested, I know the owner of a small company who is a real artist in passerelle customization.
An entirely different league compared to Besenzoni etc., and goes all the way up to 380V AC stuff, so you'd be covered up to M10... :D

Lateral thinking on aluminum

Apropos of alu boats, today I saw something that you might consider for M2.
What about an alu tender, which you could beach pretty much anywhere, with an 80hp o/b and a bimini, good for w/ski, diving, fishing... and equipped with no less than its own crane?!?
Which would come in handy, if and when you should bring the Google team around SoF, to carry their pretty heavy u/w equipment - as this one is doing... :D

Very much enjoying the thread, thanks.

Just curious, if Fairline's next SQ78 customer came along and asked for the exact same spec as M2, would they just sell the boat and move to production with all the same mods?

Swim platform gelcoated. Won’t be needing this for a while :-)

Shame the swim platform is done. Was going to suggest you put a window in it, so when lowered to water level you can see below the water similar to glass bottomed boats.

Would be great for the kids. Just tell them to keep watch for sea monsters. Keeps them out the way while the adults drink wine and talk about your next boat :)

Very nice idea Danchc, not seen one before and I think it would be quite easy on most boats to modify the positions of the platform support beams beneath to provide an uninterrupted view through a reasonable sized "window". Would be handy for keeping an eye on the crew whilst they dive-clean the underwater gear too.

Even better at night when the area below the platform is nicely illuminated by the Lumishores in the transom and all the fish turn up to have a look.

Cheers
Jimmy

Nice idea Danchc. Still can do that. The 4 raised panels you can see (which are recesses when it's the right way up) are to be cut out after the GRP has cured to leave 4 massive holes (you cannot mould it without these panels filled in, else it wuld distort during curing) . The 4 holes are then filled with teak grating. After deliver I could swap 2 panel for glass. I'll contemplate this. Slight problem is slippiness underfoot. And of course the lack of drainage/increased drag in a swell with the glass

re the glass bit, I'm pretty sure the glass could be sandblasted or whatever you call the non slip structural thing.
Admitedly wont be transparent as is, but when touching the water it will be. However, you need to find a way to keep water out of the bathing platform once it touches the water, else it's pointless.
Just remember that the one side of the glass must be in contact with the water the other must be clear.

Sod it, makes the whole point of the sandblasting impossible too
OK, back to zero...
