BOAT FOLK PLEASE READ

Well , I wish you well, and hope things improve. If you pay taxes you fully deserve support from the government during the pandemic. All the best to you.
thanks, there are quite a few people who despite paying their various taxes have been allowed to fall between the "handout" gaps. it can't get much worse, hopefully it will get better. I'm sure our marvellous chancellor wont worry about any of this too much given the wealth of the family he married into.

Lots of companies have done very well since the start of the c19 outbreak, as documented any with morals have handed back bailout money or large proportions of the money now they have realised the effects have been positive to their bottom line. Why the government did not make the handouts means tested or have clauses to make it fair I will never understand. Like many others we have not been able to access our boat due to being in level 3 and not being able to travel to a lower tier, I am sure businesses that look for repeat business and have any form of PR understanding will support there long standing clients by some form of reimbursement. My thoughts go out to those who have for no fault of their own businesses effected and had to lay people off due to C19. I wish you all seasons greetings and hopefully a successful 2021.

Hoping this thread might of ended by now! let's see if Tesco and Sainsbury,s and all the larger chains who also have received grants " reimburse " all of us for buying food during the lockdowns. We need food , just as boat owners need somewhere to store their boats . But someone else will always 9 times of ten fill that space with their boat to replace yours.Yes it should of been means tested much more to businesses that needed it most. Conservative government love supporting leisure business particularly the boating game. Look at all the normal monies given out to the larger boat builders in development grants and to support them when they in times of difficulties when they might have to make staff redundant when boat sales have slowed down.

They may not reimburse us for buying food - which is a bit silly to be honest but as has been widely reported.........

“Two of the UK’s biggest supermarkets have bowed to pressure and are repaying more than £850m in business rates relief they accepted from the UK government to help the supermarkets deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
In a surprise move, Tesco announced its decision to repay £585m on Wednesday morning. Morrisons followed suit, saying it would repay its £274m of financial support on Wednesday evening.”

I believe it is the right thing to do but each to their own..............

Strikes me that marinas have two parts to them. 1. The berths, for which a berth holder pays a fixed yearly fee. It comes with certain expectations ie security, water, electricity etc. 2. The shipyard services ie repairs etc etc. this is variable revenue ie only happens if a boat needs fixing. I do not believe that marinas should have furloughed any staff involved in providing services expected for activity 1. Nor should they have furloughed staff and passed any discount on to berth holders. revenue is fixed and the services expected should be delivered. Nor should Boat owners be getting discounts on the back of government handouts. Re shipyards I think entirely a different matter. The aim of furlough was ultimately to ensure that permanent jobs were not lost, that people were able to survive a short term crisis. i think entirely fair to furlough staff in this area where all activity stopped. This is good for those people who would have had no work during this time, and boat owners who will as a result still have a shipyard to service their needs. In sum furlough was not there to create a profit for businesses or allow them to pass savings on to their customers. It was there to help them keep afloat and keep a workforce in place that is needed. It clearly was not perfect but that is almost impossible to achieve. And clearly shops like Tesco should be passing back excess profits generated by the savings they made due to furlough money they took.

I thought we ending this thread , as they is lot of division on this subject And I am keeping out if the brexit part with the VAT issue lol!

You just feel guilty.

Guilty about what seastoke?

FWIW, my company didnt furlough any staff or make any of them redundant and neither did we take any other taxpayers money by way of rates rebates, CBILS or Bounce Back loans. We did suffer a big drop in turnover this year as a result of which we will make a trading loss for the first time in the company's 31 yr history which we will fund from the company's own cash reserves

I thought that was the right and ethical thing to do so please tell me why I should feel guilty? I tell you what I am feeling and that is rather stupid. The more I hear about companies using and fraudulently abusing (IMHO) the various govt Covid financial help schemes, the more I feel stupid for not doing it ourselves?

What will you do if they come knocking for the money back.
Well the grant is basically a gift as far as i am concerned, its different with the bounce back ( which I have not bothered with at all) , loan as its a agreed repayment contract ( I be interested to see how many people actually pay that one back. ) anyway For myself , it had been invested in my business so in my case a updated larger boat hoist. So if they want their money back, I raise the money , or sell the hoist off. As I have invested the grants in my business and can prove this I can not see what the problem would be.
I thinking of doing a utube video on this subject lol!

I would hope that your post is just misplaced humour. If not and you are just intent on annoying people, well done you have succeeded.

A gift ? Businesses have gone under and individuals descended into bankruptcy as a result of this pandemic.
You have a new boat lift which our taxes have given you as a ‘gift’ future generations will be paying for it and you see it as a joke ? Please let us know which is your yard so we can avoid it like the plague.

Gift maybe the wrong words i pay a set amount of business rates, like everyone else which is what this grant is based on. The business rates we pay! And lots of it over the years, except for this year.. The government sent me a letter after the first lockdown , stating you can have this Grant! They have picked out leisure, retail etc. Whst is the problem . Its the government deciding where is goes!
