Boat delivery

See you've already stepped into the "captain" shoes...
He's the one who will get the blame when something bad happens...
I *think* in the UK the owner can pay crew to sail the boat for his enjoyment without it being a commercial vessel, but I don't really fancy ending my trip in an interview room with no windows waiting for a translator to appear to explain what the port police were demanding to know so I'd want to be 100% sure that I understood the Greek requirements (perhaps more so than almost any other destination in the med - because they have a reputation for making the rules up as they go along!)
That’s why I would like him to be the skipper.

So I have to make it clear that I am crew? I have a boating and a radio license though.
Yes. If he is paying you I would get him to sign a contract explaining your duties and responsibilities making clear he is the skipper even if asleep and you are on watch.

..and that the vessel is suitably insured for the voyage and that you are covered by the insurance including for repatriation.

If UK flag the owner / skipper would have to refer to the IPV code including requirements for safe manning - but from France to Greece with Greek ownership and who knows what flag, I have no idea. If you are considering a career as a delivery skip it's probably worth a look.

I’m not really considering that career. I see this more as a chance to buy a windvane. I prefer to stay poor and sail my 45 year old 10 meter boat with the engine off.

Try not to let the naysayers put you off......
I don't think there is much naysaying going on. Most seem to be broadly supportive - nevertheless it pays to be sensible, Captain.

A situation where they turn up in La Rochelle, the owner looking for guidance from the professional he has hired for £5k and the crew looking to the owner for expertise would be 'difficult'

It might be that the owner is a competent and experienced sailor in which case it sounds like a great trip!

Seeing that map it would be a great trip. I hope the owner goes through with it. I just think he doesn’t have a lot of experience. His first idea was to put the boat on a truck, transport it to the South of France and start from there. He asked me if it was possible to sail the boat around Gibraltar. It’s a brand new Beneteau Oceanis 50 so I said I thought it was possible. He said he was a sailor though. Let’s see if he calls again. My idea was to ask 5000 Euro.
Is this based on what you are worth.....or the value of the boat ?
Ask him to advertise on this forum...see how many experienced old salts would do it for a rum ration and bus fare home

Based on the price of a windvane and more seriously the Greek boat delivery rate which seems to be 4 Euro per mile.

Why should I seek competition?

To help your friend.
We have people here who after sailing out could be kept in an inebriated state until the return leg....no matter how long the boat stays there
