Boat damage Hasler

I had a voice message left today to say that my sons boat berthed in Hasler marina has sustained some damage along the starboard side and the guard rails are broken. Its even more of a pain since my son is away on business and has left me in charge of matters arising. Really didn't know what to do and so phone the marina who were very vague about what's going on and were only able to add that as the guard rail failed the fenders had dropped so they re tied them onto the stanchions.

What else should I do? can I trust the marina staff to have done things properly as I am about 150 miles away and working I cant just pop down look and get away

Yes, if anyone is going to Hasler in next couple of days a quick look to see would be a great help or I guess I could get a boatyard to go over to look but I really don't know if its something or nothing

might be worth putting the marina on notice that they should retain any CCTV for the insurers ? Really sad that there isn't a note from the perpetrator. Commiserations.

A big thank you to Sishoe, by 9 am this morning I had pics of the boat and a comment on the damage. Thats the power of this network.

Luckily the damage is only a broken guardrail caused I suspect by fatigue, and the marina had put the fenders in the right place to avoid hull damage. When you 150 miles away its such a relief to know whats going on.

Sishoe(Simon) has been hit twice there to my knowledge , not good in my view. Too many boats on too small pontoon moorings. When the planners designed the layout years ago a 10m boat went on a 10 m pontoon. The fairway was designed that width. As boats get bigger occupying the same mooring the fairway gets smaller. It's called greed from the operators.

But it isn't restricted to any one operator. All the big marina groups do it.

What is a bit odd is that an 8 metre finger with an 8 metre boat berthed on it is now considered 'underused'.

I wonder if there is any guideline to the minimum acceptable width of a fairway in a marina. It's not like a car where a few cm either side is enough to get through a gap. Boats drift sideways.

Where I am berthed is owned by the harbour authorities and they have strict rules on size of boat per pontoon size to distance between fairways, and they have a very inflexible attitude to any change. Don't know which is better

I understand that the YHA requirements are that the pontoon finger must be at least 75% of the length of the boat.
