I have put together a system as described on p67 PBO Feb 2019 and connected it to an Android phone (Nokia 5) without any success. The RTL SDR driver and AIS share apps have installed OK, as has the Boat Beacon app itself, and I have calibrated the SDR dongle ppm offset using another app, SDR Touch.
In demo mode AIS share shows simulated messages being received and transmitted but nothing appears on Boat Beacon. I have followed the website http://www.ebctech.eu/blog/rtl-sdr-ais-receiver/ in setting things up; everthing seems in order (apart from the multicoloured display show in section 7 of the website, which is clear).
I have tried both a homemade aerial, (which I have confirmed does receive using the SDR Touch app and also using it as the aerial for my VHF) and also the masthead VHF aerial, but even when a few metres from a fishing boat and a fixed beacon both transmitting AIS nothing shows on Boat Beacon.
The system does seem quite unstable. With the first OTG cable I tried error messages (mostly but not exclusively indicating the dongle had been unplugged) became increasing frequent. A second OTG cable is an improvement, although the usb - dongle connector needs wriggling a bit sometimes.
I'm now wondering whether to replace the dongle or save up for a proper receiver!
Has anyone done this successfully?
