Boat and engine efficiancy, drive type?

6. Not permanently immersed in salt water ...

I have sterndrives on the Windy and i'd never dream of having them again on any boat, unless I was dry stacking it, and even then I wouldn't be keen

At least with the higher fuel consumption of shafts, you spend the money when you use the boat, so the value and the cost are more related. Sterndrives cost even when you can't use the boat due to weather, circumstances etc, and they're also much more likely to ruin a holiday, with all the associated hassle, disappointment and costs.

Another way of looking at it is that Sterndrives are more about fixed costs per season, so the incentive is to use them as often as possible to reduce the cost per hour.

Shaftdrives, my wallet would wince every mile I cover.

So as fuel costs are increasing disproportionally , relative to the fixed maintenance cost, on a fast that's around 30+ knot cruise ( conditions permitting ) stern drive / Ips pods come into there own

Hang on we going full circle that's why they were invented?
To save ££££ on diesel ( ok boat builders love the ease of installation and extra space liberated by the aft placement )
This ratio re fuel cost / maintenance will only continue to swing more in favour of this design, ie against shafts @ speed
It boils down as mentioned - exactly what you want to use/ do with your boat in what sea state .

Which boat are you on ?? a SS7 or any of the other DSV's ??

So speed should not be of essence, seakeeping, space and reliability is... then there is the question of canvass or hard-top / Flybridge ... this could go on and on ... :)

Am on dsv seven atlantic.

Boats my escape route if you like.
Do all, bit of fishing, cruise around west coast of scotland :) bit of diving, but its got to be comfortable.

OK... wife works for Solstad, so know the three Normand ..... ones in your fleet... from a diving perspective not comparable with Atlantic...

So... what you need is something you can use and not be too worried about mess on the aft deck etc., and have nice accom..

How many in your family / party ? ... ages etc.... and would they come along...

Got wife & daughter myself ... enjoy diving and fishing, so useable aft deck was therefore important... and even today daughter (20 years old) wants to come along... but brings boyfriend... (nice lad by the way).

I was on the construction and commissioning phase of atlantics build. In rotterdam Merwede shipyard. I did contemplate building a forty footer myself, and that idea is still ringing bells, but thats another day. Just buying work there I think.
Predominantly, boat is for me, Im single, again, but have a good number of friends, and if a couple of them want to come then need space. I like my mates around.
I like open fresh air, hence open cockpit, after beeing locked in a gas tube for seven months of the year.
I'm not worried about the vagaries of uk weather, skins waterproof, and if I get a couple of years use out of this, and decide i would like fly bridge or similar, then so be it. I definitly am not in to all the new curvy shapes of the latest sunseekers, plus i cant justify spending that sort of money.
Although there is a lovely ss caribean for sale on the south coast, :D
(too much for me :)
Where do you keep your boat then.
I havent spotted a small boat mooring in aberdeen, normal range of clankers and dsv's and thats about it
