I have recently acquired a boat with the above sterngear. On dismantling the prop. from the shaft there is a thick backing/thrust washer at the rear of the prop. hub which prevents it fitting into the prop. shaft housing (about a 3mm gap) and also leaves the locknut on the very end of the shaft. It appears to fit perfectly without this, just entering the prop.shaft housing and giving sufficient thread clearance for the locknut.
Can anyone please tell me which is the correct setup?
Also can someone please advise if there are any other make of prop. which will fit this outdrive.

Thanks

Re: couple of thoughts

This is just guess work.

Sounds like the wrong thrust washer. But beware, it may not be correct to dump the washer, you may need to replace it with the proper one. Also, some boats have been set up to divert some of the exhaust gas into the water flow to the prop, to allow the prop to ventilate a bit and go faster. Usually this is done by drilling holes in the hub of the prop, so the thru-prop exhaust gases leak out a bit. It's just possible that someone tried to get same effect on your boat by fitting a too-thick thrust washer? Speshully if they were just experimenting and didn't want to drill the prop hub?

Steel developments in Earlsfield would be pretty knowledgeable about props for outdrives and can supply aftermarket props and advise which ones will fit your beemer

I have twin B130 mkII outdrives, which I think are the same. The thick thrust washer can actually go both ways round. One way round, the correct way, the heavily internaly chamfered end, marries up with the tapered section just as the splines finish before the drive end- this forms the thrust face. I have now changed from the BMW props to a short hub Volvo one (15 x 15 inch), whose hub is a little shorter, so this thrust washer I've turned round. It does leave about a 12mm gap between the washer and the casing, but seems to be ok. The nut has plenty of thread left.

Thanks for the responses - the thrust washer fits the shaft correctly and is not unduly thick. I can only assume that the prop. is not the standard BMW one. I will check with the company in Earlsfield.

I have a BMW d190 engine with BMW drive leg and have it set up to use a volvo penta long hub propeller by using an addaptor. Contact a company called Steel Developements they advised me on my prop and provided the addapter. Penta props are much better than BMW in my opinion.

Re: BMW legs

My last boat had BMW B190 / MKII and I have a few spare props including a genuine BMW item brand new. I also have manuals for the engines and legs. let me know if anything is of interest.

These legs attract an awful lot of critisism re reliability etc. In my experience they are very reliable if you treat them with respect and follow service reccomendations, far better than the mercruiser legs on my current boat! . Mostly it seems to be scaremongering based on ignorance.

good luck

Re: BMW legs

Did anyone take you up with the offer of the manuals and bit?
I have recently bought a boat fitted with BMW D6 36 TA and BMW outdrives.
I would be interested in any books or info as well as any parts
