Can anyone out there help?!! Just back from our yacht which is in the Western Caribbean (Panama), to receive letter from Pantaenius saying they are not able to offer to renew our insurance - which expired a week after we returned.
Series of phone calls indicates that they (and some others) have decided that more elderly (our Warrior 35 built 1978), less valuable (insured value £35000) boats are not worth their while insuring, so for those of us with these splendid well-proven (5 Atlantic crossings, regular refits and pretty well equipped and maintained) craft - tough!
Also appears that it is pretty difficult to obtain insurance for this area from anyone - so, can anyone give us any pointers where to go? All ideas gratefully received.

Seven Seas Cruising Association has a link up with an insurer, you need to be a memebr of SSCA but if you're doing extensive international cruising that's not a bad idea anyway.

Attn Yacht Insurance Department

Sorry don't have the number with me.

In 97 they insured my old steel ketch with just 2 of us on board for a transatlantic circuit. From memory it cost about £650 per year fully comp - this was £200 more that I paid for cover in the UK. The excess was also raised from £250 -£1000 for the trip

I made a claim from Barbados for rig damage we suffered on the crossing and they sorted it out very efficiently.

(HINT - do not get rig repairs done in Barbados – got to Bequia it is only another 80 miles - but that’s another story)

Please let me know how you get on as I have the same problem to sort next spring

Good Luck

Admiral

I hope this is of use to you. I spoke to some friends of mine who are currently out there and I asked them about their insurance. They tell me that the insurance companies have kinda carved up the market and up to 200,000 yachts use Admiral (may be spelled Admirall) and over 200,000 yachts use Pantaneaus.

Seemingly this is well known on the radio net out there so it may be good info (I hope).

Rgds

Richard
