Having replaced my garmin 230 with a 188c. I feel that the old g chart shows better detail than the blue chart. Am I doing something wrong?

Firstly go into the menu of the 188c and select the level of detail you wish to show for each scale - this may be the issue if the defaults differ from your previous machine.
The charting is 'different' - G - Charts were Navionics cartography on Garmin specified chips, Blue Charts are produced by Garmin from a different cartography they have, I believe, aquired. Think it's the funny named one......Russian?
Anyway whats charted doesn't fundamentally change but how the unit choses to display it in each 'scale' can.

The blue charts are based on Cmap data (Norwegian). They do (apparently) show less detail, they're meant to. The data is all on layers and you can turn it on/off through the menus
